Measuring Alouatta skull
I recently completed my Ph.D. in biological anthropology at UC Davis. My interests lie in applying recently developed techniques in evolutionary biology, broadly known as the phylogenetic comparative method, to reconstruct and evaluate morphologic character evolution in nonhuman primates. My dissertation investigated the evolution of brachiating locomotion in one group of New World monkeys, the Atelines (Primates: Platyrrhini: 13 species of the genera Alouatta, Ateles, Brachyteles, and Lagothrix). I reconstructed the pattern of postcranial character evolution in these monkeys to test hypotheses of adaptation and character independence in their locomotor system.
