Ambrai's Advanced Civilization

Advanced Civilization is a board game that was distributed by Avalon Hill (AH) until it was
recently bought out by Hasbro. It is a wonderful
multi-player game. But if you found this page you probably already knew that! AH Civilization is
what the computer game by the same name is based on.
Generally, you start with one person, and grow
and multiply to build cities and expand your nation. As your nation grows, you acquire commodity
cards that you can trade with other players to increase your wealth. With the money you earn,
you can purchase civilization cards which give your nation benefits and bonuses in different
areas such as agriculture, mining, astrology. As your nation grows, time moves on, the first
player to reach the end of the timeline causes the game to halt. The player with the most points
wins based on timeline location, number of cities, treasury, and technologies acquired. Sound
too easy? That's because I haven't told you about the calamities, they are shuffled in with the
commodity cards, some can be traded while others cannot. The calamity cards range from mildly
annoying to very painful, but you can generally recover from them relatively quickly. The game
sounds more complicated than it is, and it does take a while to play, but it is well worth it. Check out
the sidebar for the topics shared here.
