BULL!, 1997
My ASL Response To Common Excuses By
The Hearing Culture:
1. I can't walk up to those Deaf people. I will just make a
fool of myself.
- BULL!
(The Deaf have no choice but to function in the Hearing culture.)
2. My Deaf child can learn to read lips. I am too busy to learn
ASL.
- BULL!
(Even good lipreaders recognize only 20% of English. If your child
is learning ASL as a primary language, remember it is not English
signed, but a completely different language. Your child cannot
truly be part of your family until you can clearly communicate.)
3. I can't afford to provide an interpreter. I would have to
charge the Deaf clients more or just stop serving them.
- BULL!
(According to the American Disabilities Act (ADA), interpretering
services must be provided for the Deaf to assure full access to
public and private services. This is the law!)
