Fork Extensions
Fork extensions have gotten a seemingly bad reputation in the past, and I admit to being one of the ones who was raising the red flag. But in the interest of being fair, I decided to give them a shot, both to set aside any rumors and myths about them, and to give me a quick and cheap way to see if I'm going to like 6" over tubes when I add the extensions to my 2" over tubes.
The installation couldn't be easier (unless you can talk a buddy into doing it
for you!). Get the front end in the air to take pressure off the forks. Remove
the front wheel. Remove the brake caliper and hang it out of your way (be sure
to support it with a piece of wire or string, never by the hose!). Next, remove
the fender. Now loosen the pinch bolts on the triple trees and remove the fork
tubes. Now that the tubes are out, slowly remove the fork caps, with a shop rag
folded up and put over them, to catch anything that might try to come out. The
springs will pop up just a little bit when the caps come off, but not much at
all, and with hardly any pressure. Now, take the o-rings off of the stock caps
and put them on the new extensions. Some people have said that theirs were
different sizes and did not fit, but mine went on like they were made for them.
Next, just screw the extensions back into the fork tubes, and tighten them down.
I used a long allen wrench, inserted into the hole in the top of the extension.
Do a reverse procedure of the above steps to get her back together, and you're
done! Instant chopper!
