Rear Marker Lights

You can't ever
be too visible to people behind you when you're on a motorcycle. There are a
bunch of products on the market designed to make you more visible, but here's a
mod you can do yourself, and it will only set you back about $20 and an hour or
so of your time.
First off
you need 2 marker lights. I got mine from
Pep Boys.
You want to get ones that are roughly the same size as the reflectors above your
license plate. You can find them in chrome, white or black.
- Start by removing the
seat, taillight and rear fender, so you can gain access to the wiring.
- Remove the reflectors
from their mounts.
- Carefully work a small
screwdriver between the reflector and the base. It's glued on, so it takes a
bit of effort.
- Snap the reflectors off
of their bases.
- You need to drill 2 holes
(for the lights I used anyway) in the bases for the wires to go through.
- Mount the new light bases
to the reflector bases. You may have to file down the edges on the reflector
bases a little bit.
- Run the pigtail wires
through the holes you drilled, and into their contacts.
- I filled the holes I
drilled with silicone after attaching the wires. Keeps them seated and
waterproofed.
- Mount the bases back onto
the license plate mount.
- Now run the wiring up to
where you can attach them to the license plate light.
- Using some scotch locks
(or t-connectors, whatever you call them) attach the wiring to the license
light wiring.
- Turn on the key and check
to see if everything works. Does it? Excellent!
- Bundle up the wiring and
put a healthy layer of electrical tape or shrink wrap on it.
- Remount the fender,
taillight and seat and take a ride!

Here's a
couple of "after" shots showing the lights in action.
