Waylon Smithers is the loyal assistant to Mr Burns. He cares for Mr. Burns every need and whim. Smithers is actually the only voice of reason at times to stop Mr. Burns from screwing everything up.

Mr. Smithers actually has a strange relationship with Mr. Burns.  The power Plant could not run without him, so Mr. Burns is unknowingly dependent on him. But, Smithers has a secret crush on Burns even though he treats him so bad.

While Smithers can be as ruthless as Mr. Burns, he has been known to be compassionate.

Smithers is also gay, but still in the closet.  Knowing that he must always keep his secret from Mr. Burns.
