What the box says:  Alien is the first movie of one of the most popular sagas in science fiction history, and introduces Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, the iron-willed woman destined to battle the galaxy's ultimate creature.

Back from the outer reaches of the galaxy, the massive space-tug "Nostromo" glides silently through space.  It's taking its seven-member crew back to Earth.  But when the ship's computer receives a distress signal from a nearby planetary system, it rouses the crew from their cryo-sleep.  It isn't until after the "Nostromo" has landed on a barren planet named LV-426 and three crewmembers have gone out to investigate a huge derelict spacecraft that the signal is deciphered and found to be a warning.  But one crewmember has already experienced a shocking face-to-face encounter with an alien creature while inspecting an egg-shaped pod.  And so the horror begins.  Now the crew must fight not only for its own survival, but for the survival of all mankind.

Brent's Note:  This DVD contains both the original theatrical version and the "Director's Cut" which is slightly different from the original version and is one minute shorter.  It is, however, not really the definitive "Director's Cut".  Ridley Scott has admitted that the new version of the film was only called the "Director's Cut" as a marketing ploy and that he still prefers the original theatrical version.  So if you're only going to watch one version of the film, go with the original and not the fake "Director's Cut".
