Directed by: David Fincher Written by: David Giler & Walter Hill and Larry Ferguson; Story by Vincent Ward, based on characters created by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett Starring: Sigourney Weaver, Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance & Lance Henriksen What the box says: Lt. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is the lone survivor when her crippled space ship crash lands on Fiorina 161, a bleak wasteland inhabited by former inmates of the planet's maximum security prison. Ripley's fears that an Alien was aboard her craft are confirmed when the mutilated bodies of ex-cons begin to mount. Without weapons or modern technology of any kind, Ripley must lead the men into battle against the terrifying creature. And soon she discovers a horrifying fact about her link with the Alien, a realization that may compel Ripley to try destroying not only the horrific creature, but herself as well. Brent's Note: This DVD contains both the original theatrical version and a new Special Edition cut that features 30 minutes of additional never-before-seen sequences. Interestingly, neither cut is as the director intended, as the director, David Fincher, quit the production during the middle of editing and we will never know exactly what his complete vision was for Alien³. First-time director, Fincher, who would go on to direct such films as Se7en and Fight Club, fought with the producers and the studio all throughout pre-production, filming and post-production of this film. Many of Fincher's ideas were never even filmed. This Special Edition cut restores many scenes that Fincher originally wanted in the film, but it is far from a definitive version of the film. Alien³ remains an interesting and ambitious failure, though it is not nearly as bad as many of its critics suggest. |
