About Alicia Wagner Calzada

Alicia Wagner Calzada, a past president of the National Press Photographers Association, has been a photojournalist for over a decade, covering events and people throughout the world.

She has a passion for all people, from the war widow in Texas to the tea pickers in Sri Lanka. While she has met and photographed world leaders and movie stars, Alicia gets her greatest satisfaction from finding extraordinary stories in ordinary life.

She looks forward to the chance to tell the story that is important to you. As a Spanish speaker she can help you cover the US/ Mexico border, and issues deep into either nation. Here are a few highlights:

  • January 2007 -- Journey Images, which had been operating at a reduced level, is back to full strength after Rumbo newspaper transitions to a weekly and cuts staff.
  • June 2005 -- Alicia is elected President of the National Press Photographer's Association
  • July 2004 -- Alicia is elected Vice President of the National Press Photographer's Association
  • July 2004 Alicia accepts a full time position as a staff photographer for start-up Spanish language newspaper RUMBO.
  • 2004, June -- The 2003 NADB annual report, which prominently features Alicia's photography, is honored as one of the nation's "top 100 annual reports" by the LACP Vision Awards.

  • 2003, November -- Alicia and Billy photograph missionaries in Bogota Colombia for ABWE.

  • 2003, November -- Alicia becomes the founder and chair of the NPPA Advocacy Committee, enabling her to speak out on behalf of photographers and free press issues.

  • 2003, September -- "Claras Esperanzas, Clear Hopes," exhibit, a part of SAFotofestival highlights Alicia's documentary photography for the North American Development Bank.

  • 2003, May -- Alicia is chosen as a contract photographer for the America 24/7 project. Her images are selected for the book America 24/7, published in October 2003 and Texas 24/7 published in September 2004.


  • 2003, October -- Alicia leads the effort to create the "NPPA Independent Photographers Toolkit," conceiving and implementing the NPPA Cost of Doing Business calculator, a tool for photographers which is heralded throughout the industry.

  • 2002 Alicia is elected by her peers to be on the board of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA).

  • 2001 -- Alicia Wagner becomes Alicia Wagner Calzada when she marries her soulmate, Billy Calzada, who is also a photographer. The two move to San Antonio, Texas where Alicia begins her photography business, Journey Images.

  • 2000 -- Alicia returns to Texas, living on South Padre Island and covering the Rio Grande Valley as well as the Texas/Mexico border.

  • 1999 -- Alicia spends 9 months documenting the work of Habitat for Humanity International(HFHI) in Asia and the Pacific. In less than a year, Alicia visits and photographs 11 countries in Asia and the Pacific. In addition, she teaches photography classes to local staff to enable them to use photography more effectively. Alicia's images appear in HFHI's magazines, books and annual reports.

  • 1997 -- Joins the photo staff of the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando Florida. Covered major sports, news events, and features in Central Florida.

  • 1995 -- Hired as a staff photographer at The Advocate, the daily in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Covers news, features, sports and politics in the state capital of Louisiana. Major coverage included school desegregation, prison system and the Superbowl.

  • 1994 Alicia Wagner receives Bachelor of Journalism in Photojournalism from the University of Texas at Austin. A concentration of courses in anthropology provides Alicia with a deeper love and understanding for people and cultures.
