Priests
Priests gain spells not by elemental alignment, but through the power of their god or gods. Generally, priests devote themselves to one specific deity, and can perform spells that relate to that god's sphere of influence. Priests that serve a general pantheon, or multiple gods, can cast general spells of blessing or healing, and perform the required holy rites of most of the deities. The levels of skill priests and rules for spell casting fall into are similar to those of mages (read 'news magic' for details). Priests of a specific deity (who should be the majority of magic using clergy) are marked in some way by their god. This mark varies from priest to priest, but generally is an attribute of the physical appearance of their god.
There are different levels of the priesthood, just like there are different levels mages and different levels of learning within the guilds. Generally the highest level of priest are the closest to the god they represent.
- High Priest:
This person is hand chosen by the church's council of elders after the death of the previous High Priest or High Priestess. The one chosen is usually one who has devoted their entire life to their deity and try to live within the shadow of said deity. This person is rarely seen since they work closely with their god and can work magics similar to their god and are only able to work strong spells within the land their god over sees. Some high priests can be considered apprentices to their gods if they wish to learn more of their magics.
- Cardinal
This person works closely with the High Priest. This is also the very first to know about any changes of the laws given by the god. Because of how closely they work with the High Priest, this person is seen on occasion, usually when they stand before a congregation of priests and worshipers to announce vital information.
- Bishop
This person works more closely with the priesthood than they do with the higher levels. You can see bishops in most major countries advising leaders such as kings, lords, dukes, and the like. These people do most of the re- search and dictate which sector of the priesthood gets which information, though they do make sure everyone eventually finds out.
- Priest
This is the person you see the most wandering around town or giving the sermon in the Temples or where ever they decide to talk. Though pious, these people do not have as much say in the hierarchy of the priesthood. These are the ones that give up the most to become closer to their god. A priest tends to live a very simple life and are most always poor. The priest is the one that lets the population know about things going that they need to know.
There are different levels within the priesthood itself. These are fairly minor levels which are used to weed out those that are seeking a free ride in life. No matter which level a priest is on, life for them is not easy, not even for the High Priest.
