Chapel Hills Presbyterian Church started the Reading Enhancement Program in the Fall of 2001. The program is designed to bring tutor/mentors together with children in the community that are not reading at their grade level. The tutors are church members, community members, High School and college students. The program is held at Chapel Hills Presbyterian Church, and snacks are provided. Classes are held twice a week after school, 1½ hours each day with students working on reading and comprehension skills, and also homework help. Students can also spend some time in the computer lab, working on reading or math skills.
The tutors/mentors go through a training session, and generally come once a week. Since the children come twice a week, our goal is to have them meet once with an adult tutor, and the other time with a teen. The kids and tutors have really seemed to enjoy it. If your are interested in tutoring, please call the program coordinator, Deby Elliott at 214-893-9058.
