Note for:   Nellie Jane Lafferty,   29 JAN 1906 - 21 MAY 2004          Index
Charlie and Nellie were married in Phillipsburg, Phillips Co., KS on June 6, 1925 and lived in a farm house five miles south of Speed, KS. Later they moved to Grandpa Lafferty's farm south of Logan; then to the Ray farm south of Logan; the Betts farm; and then the Hindman farm. The first electricity they had was in 1947 while living at the Hindman farm
Then they purchased a farm west of Stockton, KS near where the Webster Dam was built. In 1956 they sold the farm and bought a house at 221 N. Spruce in Stockton, Rooks Co., KS. Charlie opened an automobile repair shop in Stockton at that time. The farm they sold has several good producing oil wells now.
In the words of Nellie...."we lived in depression years where bread and beans sure counted, but still have many, many happy family memories."

Nellie Jane Kern, 98, died May 21, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center, Aztec, New Mexico. She was born January 29, 1906, to William J. and Clara Lafferty on their farm near Logan, Kansas. She grew up there and attended school in Logan, graduating from Logan High School in 1925.

On June 6, 1925, she married Charles E. Kern, in Phillipsburg, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1961. They lived on farms near Logan, Speed, and Stockton, Kansas until 1956, when they moved to Stockton.

They raised eight children: Leland, Wilbur, Elmer, Donald, Carol Ann, Robert Larry, Jerry, and Linda. Four of these boys preceded her in death: Leland, Elmer, Donald, and Jerry. Wilbur followed her in death on the same day. Nellie was always very proud of her big family.

Nellie was a wonderful cook, and often opened her home to share meals with friends and family. She was always able to prepare good meals and somehow there was always plenty to go around no matter how many were seated around the table, even in hard depression times. She made lots of quilts during those years, sometimes from scraps of shirts, dresses, and old jeans, but also from many fine fabrics too. Card playing was her favorite hobby, and she was good at it. She belonged to card clubs while living in Stockton, and enjoyed a game of canasta just a few weeks before her death.

In October of 1996, when family around Stockton was gone, and her health began to fail, she moved to Aztec, New Mexico, to be near some of her children. She lived in an apartment until April of 1998, when she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Aztec.

She is survived by three of her children: Carol Ann, and husband Walter McCall, Robert Larry and wife Jackie, and Linda, all of Aztec, New Mexico. Also one sister, 97 year old Ida Dye of LasVegas, Nevada. Also numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Her memory will be treasured by all those who survive her.

It was her request that there be no memorial service. Cremation was provided by the Alternative Society, 2415 E. 20th Street, Farmington, NM 87401 - (505) 326-3671.
