Note for:   Greenberry B. Slinker,   27 DEC 1815 - 20 AUG 1896          Index
Although brought up in a slave state, Green Berry hated slavery and at the age of twenty left Kentucky going to the free state of Illinois where he lived for twenty years. For a long time he taught school and for many years made all the shoes worn by his family. He was handy with tools even though he had a crippled hand. One of his fondest memories of those years spent in Illinois was seeing Abraham Lincoln surveying land near his home. In 1841 he married Emeline Baxter, sister of George Baxter who was to marry his sister Verlinda Slinker six years later.
Emaline passed away shortly after birth of the last child, Dianah, and is buried in Mason County, IL. Green Berry married a second time February 3, 1853, Mason County, IL, to Josephine Lucinda Bryan.
In 1856 Green Berry and Josephine and their family moved from Mason County, IL to Warren County, Iowa where they lived for 30 years raising their family. Their farm was located in section 28, Warren County and the post office was Indianola, Iowa.
They moved to Phillips County, Kansas in 1889 where Green Berry died in 1896 and Josephine in 1911.
