Joyce "Doc Tate" Nevaquaya, noted Comanche historian, flute maker and
performer and artist passed away Tuesday March 5th, 1996. He was a gentle
giving man who worked throughout his life to preserve the history of not
only his own people but the Kiowa, Kiowa-Apache, Cheyenne and Arapaho
peoples. He will be deeply missed.
Joyce Lee "Doc" Tate Nevaquaya was born July 3, 1932, in Apache,
Oklahoma. He was later given the nickname of "Doc" after the family's
physician. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, five sons, four
daughters, nineteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Doc performed on the flute at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the
United Nations before the emperor of Japan and around the world. His
paintings have hung in the Smithsonian Institution, the Gilcrease Museum
and in Queen Elizabeth's private collection. He was featured in an "On
the Road with Charles Kuralt" report and honored as an "Oklahoma Living
Treasure" (second in the state's history)and as a "National Living
Treasure."
