Note for:   Ernest Louis Schoepel,   5 AUG 1845 - 3 MAR 1932          Index
In the early days, the north bank of the Fox River in the Fourth ward was lined with mills and factories, commencing with the Mitchell & Watke sash factory and ending with the SCHOEPEL TANNERY nearly a half mile up the river.
It is now nearly thirty years since Louis Schoepel came here from Oshkosh and bought the old tannery near the Webster plant on River Street. Nine years later--or in 1878--he built the present SCHOEPEL TANNERY east of Manitowoc Street. In 1892 his brother Robert entered into partnership with him and so the firm of Schoepel Brothers began. The product of the tannery is chiefly harness leather made from steer hides, although more or less upper and calf is also made. There are fifteen vats and the annual capacity of the plant is 2,000 heavy hides besides a considerable number of smaller pieces. Four hands are employed and shipments are made to all parts of Wisconsin. Furs of all kinds are also dealt in. The Schoepel brothers are men of sterling integrity and excellent business ability and their success has been earned by careful attention to details and a strict regard for doing the right thing by customers.
Note: The present tannery of Louis Schoepel was begun on the site now occupied by the Menasha Paper Company's mill where the old vats still remain filled up. the frame building was purchased by Webster & Lawson, whose premises and buildings surrounded it on all insides in 1870. the brothers then erected the present frame buildings on the banks of the river on Broad Street in the Fourth Ward where they have made great success in tanning cowhides for sole leather doing a careful and conservative business.
