Note for: Jeremiah Snyder, 5 JUL 1833 - 11 FEB 1904 Index
Jeremiah Snyder served in Co. F of the 156th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a
private, 2 May 1864 at Camp Denison, Ohio which is near Cincinnati.
Jeremiah mustered out on 1 September 1864.
Jeremiah Snider F 156 Ohio Infantry. (National Guard.) Private Private
Union
In the "Statement of Claimant" stamped July 1887 by the Pension Office,
Jeremiah states that he resided in Union City, Darke County, Ohio in 1864
and "removed" to Union City, Randolph County, Indiana in 1866 and
"removed" to New Paris, Preble County, Ohio in 1868. He "removed" to
Bartonia, Randolph County, Indiana in 1872. He "removed" to Russell,
Russell County, Kansas in 1878. He lists his occupation as "That of a
farmer and carpenter". He refiled the Declaration for Original Invalid
Pension on 31 August 1891 from Russell County, Kansas. This claim was
stamped by the Pension Office Sept. 4, 1891. In this declaration,
Jeremiah is described as "age; 61 years height; 5 feet 10 1/2 inches,
complexion; light, hair; red; eyes; blue". Apparently a pension was
issued (Certificate #739318) and he received $12.00 a month effective
Sept 4, 1891.
The Farmer, Osborne County, February 18, 1904 ( In the Natoma Items) has
an obituary that states: "Jeremiah Snyder was born in Montgomery County,
Ohio, July 5, 1833, and died at Natoma February 11, 1904."
Also I went to Natoma, Kansas with my Dad a few years ago and viewed
Jeremiah's grave. The dates on the tombstone were the same as listed
above and also had his military info on it.
I have an affidavit from Preble County, Ohio where Jeremiah states his
age as 19 and it is dated 6 October 1853. (The affidavit was signed so
he could marry Ann Catharine Renner)
I also have his military records and his claim for a pension.
As an odd curosity...you know that Jeremiah could not write...On the
Preble County Marriage Record where his signature should be is an "X"
with "his mark" written beside it. On some of his military records his
last name is spelled "Snider".
