Della Shearer Slinker as told to the Logan Republican, Logan, KS
I was born May 4, 1882 to Mary and Valentine Shearer in a part sod and part yellow limestone house on Wolf Creek, seven miles northeast of Logan, KS.
My father came to Phillips County looking for a home. He remarked that about all that you could see was a little chimney from a dugout here and there. He bought a farm from Mr. Wiltrout. Then returned home and brought his family back to Logan.
My mother told me that this was one of the nicest homes as there was good furniture already in it. All I remember, are the two walnut beds, a rocker and a baby cradle. There was a wooden floor in our home that consisted of two rooms. In 1890, my father built a frame house for his family.
There were five children in my family, two sisters and two brothers. We were: Daisy, Della, Anna, Earl and Harry. Earl died at age nine. I was a second mother to the children as our mother was sick much of the time. We had all kinds of pets and played with toads, rabbits, and birds. The creek was a nice place to play, it was sandy and the bottom was clear. We could watch the minnows, water spiders and craw dads. We made farms of sand with ponds and filled them with minnows. We used the spiders for our cows, however they caused us lots of trouble, as they would jump our fences. Also, there were lots of snakes that would frighten us.
I attended school in a sod schoolhouse called Pleasant Hill. Later, Mr. Higgins built a frame schoolhouse with benches in 1906.
My family attended a country church.
We had our share of grasshoppers, droughts and prairie fires. I remember seeing a black cloud of smoke and the fire could be seen coming. I held on to my mother's skirt and peeked out to watch. However, the wind changed course and our home was safe.
I married Lewis Slinker in 1908 and our children were Helen, Mary Ellen and Lewis (deceased).

Daisy's natural father is unknown. Her mother Mary Zackrison came to Kansas by herself from back East, and homesteaded just down the road from Valentine Shearer. They married after Daisy was born and Valentine raised her as his own. Daisy was b. December 28, 1879 and d. February 24, 1946.
Married twice, her first husband was Mr. Sebelius, the second William H. Ransom, the newspaper editor from Downs, KS. Daisy had no children. She helped to raise Will Ransom's daughters Maxine and Pauline after they married.

*One of my most vivid childhood memories is of Great Uncle Angelo and our visit to his ranch in Montana. I was almost four years old and loved horses. There were wild horses running in the pastures and I cried because my parents wouldn't let me take one home.
