"Devern was a cook in WWI, because his later profession was a bakery
chef. He owned lots of bakeries all over Kansas and Colorado and he
would bake and grandmother would run the counter. Then when I was born,
he was the chief pastry chef at the big train depot in Denver in their
fancy restaurant. The name escapes me. Grandmother was a school teacher
until she married Grandpa.
I have a gold pocket watch with the etching almost gone from wear. Mom
said that Grandpa bought it for his dad (Jon Clark) before he left for
the war. When he returned safely, his dad gave it back to him and my
grandpa carried it for years. My grandfather died of Lou Gerigh’s
disease it was so pathetic. The last 4 years of his life he was at the
Veteran’s Hospital in Topeka."
