Shearer, Maurice Edwin
Born Dec. 19, 1879 to Mary Jane McClelland & Samuel Henry Shearer. Left
Shortridge High School one month before graduation to join the 27th
Indiana Battery; fought in the Spanish American War of 1898.
1901-enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps; 1905 -became an officer & served
44 years, retiring as a Brigadier General. 1st Military Governor of
Midway Island, later became Justice of the Peace for Olongapo City,
Phillipines. 1914-led company of marines made up of prisoners from the
U.S. Naval Prison ship-Philadelphia at Puget Sound Washington, to fight
in Mexico. 1916- organized first marine detachment on the Inaugural
voyage of battleship - USS Arizona. 1917- organized 1st battalion -sixth
marines from Quanitco, Va to Belleauwood, France to fight in WWI. During
WWI commanded 3 battalions & led 3rd battalion 5th-marines to capture
Belleauwood. Awarded the Navy Cross, Army Distinguished Service cross,
Navy Distinguished Service medal, Silver Star, French Legion of Honor, &
the Croix DeGuerre for 4 separate acts of Heroism. Later served in Haiti
& China, fought in Nicarauga- for actions there - awarded Nicaraguan
Medal of Merit. Served as Commander of the Dept of the Pacific until
mandatory retirement age. After retiring he served as city manager of
Daytona Beach, FL until his death June 26, 1953 (the same day he captured
Belleauwood from the Germans in 1918) Twice married, raised two stepsons.

Daughter of John Fouts and Sara Jane Askren; born Aug 9, 1886 in a log
cabin near E. 21st & Franklin Road. Was always an active leader at Old
Bethel United Methodist Church, and in the community. As a young girl,
Mary helped raise money for the building of the Methodist Hospital.
Married Walter E. Shearer in 1907. Together they helped found the Marion
Co. Farm Bureau, Marion County Co-op & Marion Co Homemakers Extension
Service. Mary died December 3, 1990 at the age of 104 years
