The Nehemiah Project
A brief history
The Church of the Savior building project began as the result of a church wide study of the book, "The Twelve Keys" conducted by our UCC conference minister, John Krueger. As a result of these six weeks, the congregation developed a direction and some specific goals for Church of the Savior.
The following January at the Elder's retreat, the Elders were asked to pick three of these goals or directions and become a goal "champion." It was out of this retreat that the "Facilities Task Force" was created.
The project began as a congregational survey sent out with the weekly newsletter. Each member was asked for his or her wish list for our facilities. It was out of this beginning that a list of priorities for our facilities was developed. The one item that was the top of the list was to stop the roof from leaking!
The facilities task forces received approval to interview and engage an architect to provide some preliminary ideas and cost estimates. The Architectural Design Group, ADG, was engaged and after a series of meetings presented the task force with some ideas and options. These ideas and options were then presented in a series of open forums with the entire congregation. It was out of these meetings that the current project took its shape. It was decided that the project could be done in two phases and the congregation voted on December 10, 2000 to begin phase one. This is when the work really began.
The Nehemiah project is more than just fixing a roof, or enlarging our facilities, it is part of our journey together, to build upon the foundations laid by our older members, and to continue to build and grow our church family. It is as we continue to journey together, that we will grow, individually and collectively into the people and congregation, that God plans us to be. Sure, it is frightening! Nevertheless, we must remember we are not alone. God is with us and He will provide everything we need. All of the patience, love and kindness as well as any material needs we will have. All these good things are gifts from God.
