THE CURSE OF THE MANUSCRIPT EATING SLUSH PILE MONSTER...
and other ghastly tales of how not to become a successfully published writer
Presented by "The Mysterious Manuscript Evaluator" (aka Cindy Appel)
The Mysterious Manuscript Evaluator has been employed as a "reader" by a well-known manuscript listing service for the past five years. (A few of their clients have been represented by big name agents and editors from such houses as Simon and Schuster and Random House.) In her hazardous manuscript evaluating career, she has read literally hundreds of manuscripts-some publishable, most not. In a previous eerie existence, she was awarded an honorable mention in an Associated Press Managing Editors contest for her book, film and theatre reviews. Her sadistic schooling included collegiate courses in literary criticism and screenplay writing. She enjoys dissecting everything she reads and helping others avoid "instant manuscript death" by pointing out strengths and weaknesses in their prose.
In her no holds bar presentation, she will regale you with horrifying stories and gory examples of gruesome writing that will hopefully inspire you to become a better writer. Try not to scream as you listen to--
"The Lurid Legend of the Purple Crayon Manuscript"
"The Terrorizing Tale of the Talking Heads" and
"The Appalling Yarn of the Disgruntled Writer"
and others too terrifying to mention by name.
Bring your pen, paper, garlic necklace and questions and gather round the bonfire of bad manuscripts with The Mysterious Manuscript Evaluator. (Teddy Bears and security blankets optional.)

The Curse of the Manuscript-Eating Slush Pile Monster
and other ghastly tales of how not to become
a successfully published author
A program presented by Cindy Appel
In the five years I have worked as a manuscript evaluator, I have encountered numerous manuscripts that I could have recommended to editors if only the author had known a few submission "secrets." I hate having to turn away potentially strong manuscripts because of such easily corrected problems, thus my talk, "The Curse of the Manuscript-Eating Slush Pile Monster" was born. From my own submitting mistakes to the thousands of mistakes I read on an almost daily basis, I have gleamed some of the most egregious and have organized them into a program that I present in a fun, informative and, above all else, non-confrontational manner. Most authors who implement these tips dealing with formatting, writing style and content will find success in "slaying the slush pile monster" and up the odds of placing their manuscripts into the hands of publishing industry professionals.
