Welcome to the Tinplate & Midwestern Railroad. My name is Dave Farquhar, and vintage tinplate trains are one of my hobbies.
Vintage trains, particularly Lionel, unfortunately have the reputation of being a rich man’s hobby, and while that can be the case, it’s also possible to enjoy the hobby on a shoestring. I’ve never paid more than $125 for any single piece, and many of the items on my layout and in my collection only cost a few dollars. I built the layout myself. While I accomplished much of the early work over the course of three-day weekends, today I make it a point to spend 15 minutes a day doing something related to the layout. It’s fairly easy to find 15 minutes to do something, and while I may not accomplish much in a single session, at the end of each week I’ve usually made visible progress. So this hobby doesn’t require a lot of money, and it doesn’t require a lot of time.
Please have a look around, and I hope you enjoy your stay.
