How We Worship

We recognize that we worship an awesome and holy God. Our worship services are centered on Him - the primary focus being the public reading and exposition of God's Word, and the administration of His sacraments. As such, they are planned to glorify and please God rather than to entertain man and meet his felt needs. While evangelism may occur in worship as the Gospel is faithfully proclaimed, the purpose and focus of worship is that those who believe in Christ should gather and meet with God.

Our sermons are based on the Bible and are intended to teach, enlighten, comfort and encourage us to lead lives that are pleasing to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as we follow in obedience to Him.

Music is an essential part of our services as we sing psalms and hymns of praise and thanks to our Savior. The music comes from a variety of traditional sources and cultures. The lyrics are centered on God rather than man, and are Scripture-based.

We try to strike a "balance between form and freedom. In every age there is a need to reconsider the liturgical forms--not in order to do away with them, but in order to make sure that they are doing their job: uniting us in this time and place with Christians in other times and places as we join the departed saints in heaven in singing praises to our God and Savior. Although the sample form below follows the same pattern - Guilt, Grace, Gratitude - there is enough variety to encourage liberty and to avoid meaningless repetition." - from the article, "Why A Liturgical Way of Worshipping God?" by Dr. Michael Horton, associate professor of historical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in California. For excellent articles on worship, please read the January/February 1996 issue of Modern Reformation magazine.
