Day 1 - State Line/Syracuse to Garden City

I should start this story a little before Day 1, which is Saturday, June 7.

I thought I'd do something a little different this year, and ride a fixed-gear bike across Kansas.  One gear, no coasting.  It rocks.  Really.  If you want to read more about the joys of fixed-gear bikes, click here to get to Sheldon Brown's web pages about such.

On Friday, June 6, we rode a charter bus from Wichita. The bus drove past the windmill "farm" at Montezuma.  Amazing.

Arriving in Syracuse, our gear, our bikes, and ourselves were dropped at the high school.  We got there early enough to get a head-start on tomorrow by riding out to the state line and back.  It was a nice 33-mile warmup for the week ahead.

We got back in time for pizza!

Overnight, storms left everything wet and cool for Saturday's ride.  The temperature was in the 50's, and the wind was "favorable" (as my friend Mark would say), making for wonderful riding.

Oh, and I found this fellow fixed-gear rider in a parade (I think it was in Holcomb):

After the 53 mile ride into Garden City, we took over a nice plot of camping area at the Community College between a couple of huge pines.  El Charro restaurant served us a nice mexican lunch, and Discount Liquors stocked Boulevard Bully Porter.

A nice start to the week...
