Overnight thunderstorms ended as we awoke this morning. The storms kept the temperatures cool through mid-morning. A little bit of tailwind pushed us down a newly-finished-but-closed-to-motors section (16 miles!) of highway 150 between Marion and Elmdale.

Just past Elmdale, the fixed-gear-bike-idea got its harshest test: a short, steep section of road. (It's always scarier when a hill has a name. In this case, "Elmdale Hill" was the phrase tossed around.)

Yes, it's clear we're in the Flint Hills, now. Most of the morning was spent motoring along under overcast skies, and the descents outnumbered the climbs.
Here's a shot of the Chase County Courthouse in Cottonwood Falls:

Lunch was found at Olpe's Chicken House. Ignoring the restaurant's namesake, I went for the oft-requested cheeseburger-with-grilled-onions-only-please. I bet it weighed half a pound, and cost, I dunno, something like $1.75. Real good food.
At the evening meeting, Alan Mueller sang a cleverly-written, BAK-themed
piece to the tune of "Summertime". A capella, even!
