No Sex #18
This is the final issue of the regular
series. It was 38 reduced digest pages on white stock. It was published by Jerry Foley
and his Night Shadow Comics for distribution in August 1989. I had a lot of
issues on my plate by the time of publication of this issue. The time, money and resources
that I allocated to this project did not make sense any more. Many of you know
that around 1996 or so I was diagnosed with adult on-set diabetes. This
explained to me the trouble I was having with my eyes as time went on. Drawing
was very close work, especially the way I was doing it with technical
drawing pens. Working with computers did not help at all and I had been doing
that since 1975. At some point my eyes almost gave out. Once I got the diagnosis
of my illness, the doctor hooked me up with glasses, but by then I had
established a routine for my artwork and drawing with the glasses was very
uncomfortable. I stopped doing it altogether for years unless it came up in
conversation,
say
at work or something, and then I would show my skill, which still seems intact.
The illness and lack of activity really depressed me and it showed in my
personal and public life. I stopped corresponding to N3F and they had to pick a
new president. I had been the president for several years and was controlling
everything, so it was becoming uncomfortable for them. I didn't have jobs that
paid well so I could not buy fanzines, correspond like I used to or draw and
self-publish. I said "screw it" to everything. I did maintain contact with Jim
Gray (he is my oldest friend and we sank into the depths of age together), but
hardly anyone else. Jerry had this issue and material for a 19th issue which
probably got lost. I am sure he felt bad about that, but it really was no big
deal for me given what the heck I was going through. Anyway we didn't talk for
years until Matt Buchers' UltraZine Yahoo Group came up and started bringing all
the old fanzine editors together in an internet chat group. That activity not
only brought me back with friends, but it made me feel good about what I had
done in the past and led to me getting this site up about myself and my works.
If i get another issue out, I will have to credit that to the UZ Group. Some of
the information on this page was complied by Jerry Foley.
Content:
Cover by Dave Heath, back cover by Earl Geier
This issue had a bunch of great strips and for the last issue seemed to bring
back the fun and glory of the old days. We have Genesis by Willie Peppers and George Lane
and the Mars Reporter by Dave Heath and Jerry Foley, The Star of Seven Jewels by Klaus Haisch and Dave Heath,
The Starship Captain by BC Boyer, Out O’ Space by James Hernandez (this rocked!!)
and a Story by Owen K Laurion.
David Heath, Dan Day, T K Atherton, Willie
Peppers, Jerry Foley, Klaus Haisch, Jerry Collins, BC Boyer, James Hernandez, Earl Geier.
Notes:
Jerry Foley comments that on the issue "Nice strips in this issue!", adding that the Hernandez strip "rocked". I should point out that this issue has a bit of art by Jerry which is unusual for NS and some collaborations between me and Jerry. Jerry did do some professional art and is an accomplished inker. that is demonstrated well in this last No Sex issue. The cover was done by me on maneuvers in Germany. It was to be a full wrap cover, but I finally reduced it. This issue was distributed in 1989. that went on into 1990, but in the 90's I only did work for N3F and though I have material that would have gone on to make a issue 19 and 20, that never happened. So if I do get other issues out i will have published in the 70's, 80's and 00's, but there would be a gap for the magazine in the 90's I did not publish an issue in the 90's.
