Tool Borrowing At Stones

I was in my 5th or last year as an apprentice and working at Stone's in Alameda, CA.. Nice yard, good people and the work was interesting. We were building 2 Monomoy Surfboats for the California Maritime
Academy all copper rivited.

The owner had a brother in law, a dentist and Wednesday was his day off. Rather than play golf as did the other dentists, he would come to the yard and putz around.  I had my kit of tools on one of the work benches and my chisel
roll was open. I had just come back to the San Francisco Bay area after 2 years in Seattle where I had spent time and money acquiring some real fine tools from flea markets, garage sales and from widows of shipwrights who had gone to the 'Big Yard in the Sky'.

I was proud of those tools for a number of reasons.  I was using tools that had been used by 'masters' and  I  had rescued others from becoming weeders in someone's garden toolshed. This brother in law walks into the shed and strolls over to where my tools were.  Billy Linderman nudges me and says, 'he's gonna use your tools, sure as sh**'.  And so he does, without a bye your leave!  He picked up several chisels and walked out and over to his little shed. He came back about quitting time dumped the chisels on the bench and walked out. I was ready to throw the bast*** in the esturary! Billy told me to go and speak to Mr.Stone about it as this was not the first time he had done this and the other fellows were angered too. So being the 'bashfull type', I did just that. Mr Stone was very upset at the conduct of his b-i-l and told me to take what ever time was necessary to sharpen my tools and mark it on my time card and he would
charge it to his b-i-l...Since that little experience and with many conversations with others in my craft,I have learned no one lends tools unless they are confident that the tools will come back in as good or better condition.

I lend to no one EXCEPT, Tugboat Dave, if he asks to borrow a tool it will come back so 'beautiful' you are  embarrassed by the condition of the rest of your tools.
