Our Parakeets

Chen and I bought our first pair of parakeets in August, 1999......

The girl has yellow feather. We named her in Cantonese after my childhood nickname, ManZai (which means "little mosquito".) The boy has greeen and black feather. We named him also in Cantonese, MaLouZai (which means "little monkey".) We gave him this name because Chen was born in the Chinese Zodiac year of Monkey.

ManZai and MaLouZai are very cute and playful. They like to bite things, stand on the swing, and jump up and down along the wood ladder inside their cage. They love the sound of running water. They always start singing and jumping around when they hear us taking shower or washing dishes. Most of the time they are friendly to each other. But sometimes they get naughty and they fight for food and toys. MaLouZai is more aggressive and he always gets what he wants at the end.

We were planning to bring them with us when we drove across country to move to California from New York. Unfortunately their cage were too big to fit into our car, which was loaded with our luggages, on the day we left. Sadly, we had to leave them to my parents in New York. Now my parents like them a lot and take good care of them. They become my parents' favorite birds.

We bought home Kwai-Kwai. Ben-Ben and KiKi in April 2000......

Kwai-Kwai, whose name means "obedient" in Cantonese, is yellow in color. We gave him this name because of his friendly character. Ben-Ben is light blue in color. Her name means "silly" in Cantonese. She got this name because she was very shy and timid when she first came to our home. KiKi is white in color and is very pretty. We named her after my favorite Sanrio character, Hello Kitty.

Kwai-Kwai, Ben-Ben and KiKi are absolutely adorable. We teach them to stand on our fingers and shoulders and kiss our noses and ears. Sometimes they just fly (sometimes they run too) around in our living room when we let them out of the cage. They can become mischievous from time to time. When they are outside, they will try to hide under the sofa or the dinning table or stand on top of the window so we cannot catch them.
