Triangle Weave Drill

 

 

The Triangle Weave may be one of the most comprehensive practice regimens as far as integrating many of the elements of the motion offense into one easy to run, albeit exhausting, drill.  In this one drill we have left and right handed give and go's, power moves, flare cuts, cross field collapse moves, backhand-sided throws, acceleration/deceleration, play action plays and balance.

Other weave drills I've seen over the years to me are illogical and encourage a pattern of flow that is not only difficult to execute in a game, but also stress poor fundamentals and is easy to defend against.  The Triangle Weave drill emphasizes sound fundamentals and works even if you put defenders on the cutters.  I run individual sub-components of this drill successfully all the time in games and if you run this pattern it should always leave you in a square position to be able to support your team mates.

Instructions:

1)  Player 1 & 2 begin 15 yards apart with player 3 playing behind player 1 by 3-4 yards.  Player one starts with the disk and throws to player 2 and follows the throw with a power move.  After player two fakes the back hand side* throw to him, player one proceeds downfield for three steps and then makes a hard flare cut the will lead him back around where player two was.  Decelerate almost to stop here.

     *back hand side means that if the cutter is making a power move to you (as you face him) to your right side, the appropriate throw would be a right handed backhand and if the cutter is running past your left side, the correct throw would be a lefty backhand.

2)  Player two receives the disk from player one and then fakes a backhand side throw to him.  Immediately after checking off that receiver, he squares his body towards player three, throws the disk to him and begins making a power move, repeating step one above.

3)  Player three waits for player two to fake the throw to player one and then begins a cut directly at player two. When he receives the throw from player two, he fakes a backhand side throw to him to player two and then repeats step one above.

4)   Object is to cycle through ten iterations without a turnover and without vomiting.

 

Things to remember

1)  Decelerate into receptions (even the fakes)

2)  Don’t travel, achieve and then sustain balance directly over pivot foot

3)  Legitimize fakes with sustained eye contact (until power move goes beyond perpendicular)

4)  Explode out of throws, the throw should be a bi-product of your cut instead of the cut coming as a consequence of your throw.

5)  IMPORTANT: Once you've established a pivot, as quickly as possible while allowing yourself to be balanced, lift your other foot off the ground and keep it off the ground until the disc is released.
