Skills & Drills

This page contains some throwing and cutting techniques along with some links to drills at the bottom of the page.

There are dozens of other throws that can be taught and thousands of different release points, flight characteristics and grips but the focus here is on sound fundamentals and an assortment of throw selections to get you off the ground and ready to play and most importantly, to have some fun.

The triple threat stance here on the right is the throwing posture that I recommend you start with for all your throws.  In this position, the hips should be square, the shoulders should be square and the feet should be square, all directed towards your target.  Balance should be spread evenly across both legs with knees slightly bent.

If you think that this stance does not allow you to throw pass the marker, than I suggest that you turn around, and have the marker behind you.  There's 360 degrees in a circle, why choose the one degree where there is a marker present to block your throw?

If possible, try to catch the disc like this, with both hands on the rim and if the disc cannot be caught like this, at least transition into this grip/stance as soon as possible.

Fundamental Throws & Skills:

Each of these throwing fundamentals should be able to be done with either hand and with proper balance & cadence.

The basic offensive philosophy behind all of these drills, etc. is to create a dynamic and selfless team oriented offense that encourages players to work together to break down and penetrate a defense.  Encouraged is a brand of Ultimate that most closely resembles Tex Winter's Triangle Offense used in basketball (Tex has nine NBA Championship rings with the Bulls and Lakers and one NCAA championship with Kansas).

By teaching individuals to work together as a team to reach their goal, they learn how to become part of something bigger than themselves.  Individualistic play, such as repeated full field bombs or trick throws (blades, hammers, scoobers, corkscrews) is strongly discouraged.  The emphasis is on playing Ultimate with sound fundamentals and fluid mechanics.  The belief is that a strong foundation of basic skills are the key building blocks on which to build a sophisticated set of skills and techniques from.
