Backhand Airbounce

The backhand airbounce pass is a fun way to throw the disc as you can magically get the disc to rise during the flight.

The trick is to push the disc in a downwards motion while your throwing it but at the same time, you want to release the disc with the front end much higher than the back end.  This will have the affect of giving some lift which will compensate for the fact that you've thrown the disc down.

It is a useful throw for throwing into the wind and it also is useful for eluding defenders, similar to a bounce pass in basketball.

1) With your hips/shoulders/feet square, begin in the square stance as shown on the Skills and Drills   page.

2) Start the throwing motion by turning slightly to the left and holding the disc with both hands and with the left hand holding the back of the disc much lower than the right hand in front.

3) While trying to keep the disc angled throughout the throwing motion, start moving forward with the disc and pushing the disc in a downwards motion.

4) The downward motion is needed because the effect of throwing the disc with the front higher than the rear will have the effect of making the disc rise.

5) Let go of the left hand just before releasing the disc with the right hand.  This will provide added stability and allow you to press down harder on the disc as you release it.

6) Keep your eyes focused on the target throughout the motion and at the point of release, snap your wrist to give the disc extra spin.

7) Try it with your other hand.

The Grip

The grip for the backhand puts an emphasis on putting downward pressure on the disc.  Ring/pinkie fingers are folded over so their finger nails can press upwards.  The tip of the middle finger is also pressed against the bottom surface of the disc to add more upward thrust. Index finger folded over the rim for direction and more upward thrust.
