Lug Bolts and Air Wrenches

Lug Bolts and Air Wrenches
Pete Lautares, Das Kummet - Tidewater Chapter

Air wrenches are fine for removing lug bolts but do not let any shop use one to reinstall them. Why you ask? You'll find out when you try to remove a wheel to change a flat or to do maintenance. The bolts may be overtorqued and you may end up with a hernia or in traction trying to remove the bolts with a lug wrench. Over torquing can also warp the rotors. Lug bolts should be threaded by hand (apply a little antiseize to the threads), snugged up with the proper tool, and torqued to specs with a torque wrench. This will also prevent crossthreading of the bolts when being reinstalled.
