Q: What's the address of my PWP? Can I change it?

A: Your URL, or web address, will be http://pages.prodigy.net/your_username/. Because your PWP's URL is linked to your Prodigy Internet account and user name, it's not currently possible to change or customize the URL of your Personal Web Page.
NOTICE: sbcglobal.net customers: If your email address is username@sbcglobal.net, your URL is http://pages.sbcglobal.net/username (all in lowercase). If you've named your main page "index.htm," it will show up automatically when you type that URL.

Links

Q: How do I add links to my other pages or to another page on the web?

A: To add links to other pages, either your own or elsewhere on the Web, you can use either of two types of simple links. Generally, you yould use an absolute link to send a visitor to another location on the Web and a relative link to send them to another page in your own directory.

Absolute Link: Below we created an absolute hyperlink to the Prodigy Internet PWP home page by using the syntax shown. This is an absolute link because we have used the full path to the URL we are referencing:

<A HREF="http://pages.prodigy.net/username/structur.htm">This is an Absolute hyperlink!</A>

Relative Link: A relative link references the filename only without using the full path to the URL. A Relative Link presumes that the open page and the linked file are BOTH in the same directory/folder. Besides being less text to type, this helps make access to the linked page faster and lets you easily test your work offline if you have copies of all of your pages in the same local directory. Below is an example of a relative hyperlink.

<A HREF="structur.htm">This is a Relative hyperlink!</A>

back to top

Q: Why won't my link work?

A: This problem could be caused by a couple of different things. First, make sure that you have uploaded your second page to the Prodigy server by using Site Manager. Second, file names are case sensitive. This means that proper capitalization is important. For example: page2.htm, Page2.htm, and PAGE2.HTM are considered to be different file names. So, if your link looks like this:

<A HREF="page2.htm">page2</A>

But you've posted your page and given it a name of Page2.htm, your link to page2 will not work.

back to top

Q: Can I make an image "clickable" as a link to another page?

A: Yes! Here is the Prodigy logo image as a selectable hyperlink to the PWP home page:
Prodigy Internet

The syntax used to create the selectable image link is shown below:

<A HREF="http://pages.prodigy.net">
<IMG ALIGN=LEFT width=27 height=27 ALT="Prodigy Internet Star" SRC="http://pages.prodigy.net/images/plogo.gif">
</A>

It's a good idea to use a text based link along with a graphical link in case the visitor to your page is using a text based browser, or has configured his/her browser to display text only.

Graphics, Color and Sound

Q: How do I change the color of the text, links or background on my page?

A: The colors of a page's text, links and background are set by the attributes allowed within the <BODY> tag. A sample BODY tag would be:

<BODY TEXT="#000000" LINK="#990066" VLINK="#0000ff" ALINK="#00ff00" BGCOLOR="colorname">

TEXT: specifies the color of the text to be used on your page.(In this case black.)
LINK specifies the color used to identify hypertext links.(In this case red.)
VLINK specifies the color used for links that have already been visited.(In this case blue.)
ALINK is not used much, but it specifies the color of a link when it is active, ie. clicked on and acquiring the linked URL.(In this case green.)
BGCOLOR specifies the color to be used for the background of your page.
"#xxxxxx" represents the RGB Hex code for the color you'd like to use. For example #990066 is red, and #0000ff is blue.
"colorname" Many newer browsers accept the name of a color, such as red, white or blue, as an alternative to the RGB numeric for that color.

You may use the <FONT> tag to temporarily override the text color specified in the body of your page. The FONT tag requires an ending </FONT> tag. While it works with most current ones, FONT does not function with all browsers. Here's an example of changing text colors:

Here's an example of changing text colors.

And, here is the HTML syntax used:

<FONT Color="#0000ff">Here's an</FONT> <FONT Color="#990066">example of</FONT> <FONT Color="#00ffff">changing</FONT> <FONT Color="blue">text colors.</FONT>

Q: I want to use an image as a background in my page. How do I do that?

A: Placing a background image on your page is done by adding the BACKGROUND attribute to the BODY command. For example, if you have an image named back.gif that you'd like to have tiled in the background of your page, you'd change your BODY tag to something like this:

<BODY BACKGROUND="back.gif">

Replace back.gif with the name of your image file. For additional information on adding a background image to your page, take a peek at the
Using Images and Sound page.

Adding an Image:
Q: How do I add images to my page?

A: Incorporating graphics into your pages means using the IMG tag, the important mark up element that handles all embedded graphical content in HTML documents. Yet time and again we see websites that use this tag poorly. This image element, which has no closing element, has some common attributes everyone should use, and some optional ones that can enhance its flexibility. It always begins with <IMG and ends with a closing >. At minimum, a good tag should look like this:

<IMG SRC="www.gif" WIDTH=77 HEIGHT=69 BORDER=0 ALT="www logo" ALIGN=left>

Let's look at this piece by piece and then cover some optional additions.

SRC: The value of the required SRC attribute is the URL (either absolute or relative) of the image you want to display, enclosed in quotes:

Please note that filenames are case sensitive; "mypic.gif" is not the same as "MYPIC.GIF" or "Mypic.gif" so watch that your code and your filename as it uploads to your site are the same. This is one of the most common problems new designers have with their graphics not displaying.

While not mandatory, you really should use the WIDTH & HEIGHT attributes, which specify the dimensions of the image in pixels. This way the browser can determine how to layout the text before the image is downloaded, letting the user see and begin to read the text before the picture is displayed fully. It also allows users who surf with image loading turned off to see an exact-size placeholder, thereby preserving your text layout, and displaying your ALT text.

Finally, REMEMBER to upload your referenced image files to your PWP web space! You might be amazed at how many of us forget to do so.

Q: I'm getting a "missing image" icon, but I've used all the right code. What's wrong?

A: First off, make sure you've uploaded your image files to the Prodigy Internet PWP server, right along with your HTML files. Second, make sure your code is correct: <IMG SRC="mypic.gif"> adding Height, Width and Alt attributes as needed. (See our image tutorials for more info.) Third, and the most usual problem, file names are case sensitive; your code on your page has to have the same capitalization as the filename you uploaded. For example: mypic.gif, Mypic.gif, and MYPIC.GIF are considered to be different file names. So, if the command on your page looks like this: <IMG SRC="mypic.gif">, but you've uploaded an image file called Mypic.gif, or MYPIC.GIF (and some editors do capitalize it automatically), your image won't be displayed, and you'll just get a missing image icon or a blank box.

Q: How do I add background music to my page?

A: To include a background sound on your page, you need to put some special code in the BODY section of your page. Here's a good basic code:

<noembed><BGSOUND SRC="mysong.mid" LOOP=infinite></noembed>
<embed src="mysong.mid" HIDDEN=true LOOP=true>

Replace "mysong.mid" with the name of your sound file, being sure to observe proper capitalization. The EMBED tag works in Netscape and later versions of IE (3 and above); the BGSOUND tag is for older versions of IE and the PWeb browser. Putting the NOEMBED tags around it prevents an error message. The LOOP=infinte or true allow the music to play repeatedly.

This code will let the music play with no way for the user to turn it off (note the Hidden=true attribute). We recommend you be considerate and provide the user with a little control panel that allows her to turn on and off the music. Here's a suggested code to replace the EMBED stuff above:

<EMBED SRC="mysong.mid" AUTOSTART=true LOOP=true width=144 height=15 ALIGN=texttop CONTROLS=smallconsole>

There are other parameters you can add to the EMBED tag as well, including a larger console with more options, but this will get you started.

Q: Where can I find graphics?

A: Here are three good places to start:

  1. Check out our free graphics library.
  2. There are tons of free graphics sites all over the Internet - we have lots of links on the Personal Web Page Help at: http://pages.prodigy.net/pwphelp.
  3. Many more graphic links are also posted regularly on the Personal Web Page Help newsgroup at: news:prodigynet.computing.pwphelp.

Q: How do I upload graphics using Prodigy Building Blocks™?

A: To upload graphics with Prodigy Building Blocks™ just click Browse where it says, "Use Your Own Logo" and/or "Image for this page." Our tool will allow you to go to any directory on your hard drive where your graphics are stored. Once you find your graphic, select it and upload it to your site. It's that easy! Standard graphic files that are used on the Web are usually named JPEG (.jpg) and GIF (.gif).

It's a good idea to keep the graphic files small, so your visitors won't have to wait too long to download and view your page.

back to top

Q: How can I add my own photos to my PWP?

A: First, you'll need to turn your photos into graphics. To do this, contact your local film developer and ask if they are able to put your photos on a computer disk. If not, many color copy centers have scanners, a machine that basically photocopies your picture and "digitizes" it, that is, makes it a graphic. To learn how to put the graphic on your Web page, see our Step-by-Step Guide.

Page Layout

Q: I've seen pages that have newspaper style columns on them. How is that done?

A: You can create multiple columns on your page by using tables. For further details on including tables on your page, see the Using Tables page.

back to top

Q: How do I remove the borders from my framed pages?

A: Both Netscape and Internet Explorer allow for bordeless frames, but each does so slightly different. To insure that your frames will appear borderless in both browsers, your FRAMESET tag should look something like this:

<FRAMESET COLS="170,-" FRAMEBORDER=0 FRAMESPACING=0 BORDER=0>

back to top

Q: I have a page with a left and right frame, and I'd like links in the left hand frame to display pages in the right hand frame. How would I do that?

A: To have links display a page in a frame other than where the link is requires two steps. The first step is to assign a NAME to the destination FRAME, something like this:

<FRAMESET COLS="170,-">
<FRAME SRC="navbar2.htm" NAME="navbar">
<FRAME SRC="intro.htm" NAME="main_frame">
</FRAMESET>

The next step is to add the TARGET attribute to your link, giving the NAME of the FRAME that you want to TARGET. In this example, we might want a link on the "navbar2.htm" page in the left frame to display links in the right frame (which we've NAMEd "main_frame"). To do this, the links in the left hand frame would look like this:

<A HREF="mypage.htm" TARGET="main_frame">click here</A>

Uploading Files

Q: I uploaded my file(s) but I can't find the page. Where is it?

A: Prodigy Internet creates a sub-directory for your PWP files using your PI user ID, all in lower-case. For example, let's say your user id is " newuser " and you uploaded your HTML page named "mypage.htm ". The URL for your PWP directory is: http://pages.prodigy.net/newuser

However, unless you have a page file with an 'autoloading name', entering that URL would provide a listing of the file(s) which you uploaded to your PWP directory. You would have to add the name of your page to the URL in order for the browser to load it. So to have the page opened immediately, you would have to use the URL: http://pages.prodigy.net/newuser/mypage.htm

OK. So how do I get my page to autoload? HTML browsers will search for, and automatically upload, web documents (pages) with the names; index.htm, home.htm, index.html and home.html. Simply rename your page, or your main page if you have more than one, to " index.htm ".
NOTICE: sbcglobal.net customers: Your Host name will be pages.sbcglobal.net. Your UserID is your username. Your password is your chosen password (passwords are case sensitive).

back to top

Q: When I try to upload files, I get a "login denied" error. What now?

A: Make sure your settings are correct. First off, be sure you do NOT have anonymous login checked--this will send your email address as your user name, which won't work. Here are the right settings for WS-FTP.
In the Sessions Profile dialog window, type in the following settings ( most other FTP clients use similar settings):

PROFILE NAME: PI Personal Web Pages
HOST NAME: pages.prodigy.net
HOST TYPE: auto-detect
USER ID: Your Prodigy Internet login ID (do not include the @prodigy.net part)
PASSWORD: Your Prodigy Internet login password

If no one else uses your computer, you can have the program Save Password by checking that option.

back to top

Q:How do I remove files I've uploaded?

A: Open your FTP program and log into your PI site. Once you are connected, you will see an Explorer-like (or File Manager-like) interface, with two panes. The left hand pane is your local hard drive, and the right hand pane is your own private remote directory on the PWP server, which shows the files you have uploaded and any sub-directories you created. You can navigate, select, move, copy, delete and rename files in these panes just like you do in Explorer or File Manager (right clicking works fine in your ftp client if you have Win95).

Now, in the right hand pane, find the file(s) or sub-directory you want to delete. You can select consecutive files with Shift-Click and non-consecutive files with CTRL-Click, just like in Explorer. At this point, double-check that you really, really want to delete the highlighted file(s). Once you've selected your file(s), just click Delete (on the right pane's vertical toolbar), and the files will be deleted from you PWP site. Wait while everything is processing, and make sure at the end that the desired files are no longer listed in the right pane.

Q: If I already have a page on my site, will using Prodigy Building Blocks™ copy over that page?

A: If you've already created and uploaded pages, then any subsequent page that you create using Prodigy Building Blocks™ must be given a new page name or else your previous work will be overwritten. Prodigy Building Blocks™ will warn you to change the name of your page. To avoid losing files, just go back to your first page and make sure that your new pages do not share the same page name.

To be safe, you should always keep copies of your Personal Web Page on your hard drive or on a floppy disk as a backup.

Q: How do I know how much space my files take up?

A: At the end of every file transfer, our FTP server will report the amount of space used, space free, and total space available. Some FTP clients may not show this information.

Interactive Features

Q: Can someone send me an email from my website?

A: You create a simple hyperlink that includes mailto: and your email address. The syntax for an email link by a Prodigy Internet user, with the login ID of "user" would be:

Q: I'd like to let visitors download a file (image, sound, program, etc.) from my site. How do I do that?

A: Providing a link for your visitors to download a file is done the same way as linking to another page, but instead of linking to a page URL, you link to a file URL. For example, to provide a way for your visitors to download a .ZIP file, you'd do something like this:

Download my <A HREF="myfile.zip">compressed</A> file.

Replace myfile.zip with the name of your sound, image, zip, or program file, making sure to observe proper capitalization. When your visitors click on the link (in this case a .zip file), the download will begin.

Q: How do I count the number of visitors to my page?

A: Prodigy provides a free visit counter that you can use to keep track of how many people come and visit your page. To use this counter, include something like this where you'd like the counter to appear on your page (typically at the bottom of the page):

You are visitor number <IMG SRC="http://pages.prodigy.net:8989/your_name/your_name.xbm" ALT="counter">

Replace your_name in both places with a name of your choosing.

back to top

Q: How do I create a form for a visitor to send me information?

A: If you're a Prodigy Internet member, PI has provided a free forms CGI script that will work with all browsers. The use of PI's CGI script requires certain fields to be present in your form. The PI CGI script requires the use of a different ACTION than the simple form example that follows:

The basic elements needed to create a form are: FORM, SELECT and OPTION, NAME, VALUE, INPUT TYPE, and TEXTAREA. Every form must have a beginning and ending FORM tag to define the form. The beginning FORM tag identifies the ACTION and METHOD. It's not really necessary to understand all the options of ACTION and METHOD, just know that they have to be there. All form elements must fall between the beginning and ending FORM tag. Following is the code and FORM ACTION format needed to create a simple form (please note that the mailto: ACTION may not work with Internet Explorer). Simply replace "xxxxxxx@wherever.com" with your Internet mail ID:

This is a simple form, with a single text box and a 'send' button and a 'reset' button:

<FORM ACTION="mailto:xxxxxxx@wherever.com" METHOD=POST>

Enter your E-mail ID here:
<INPUT TYPE="text" name="emailid" SIZE=38 MAXLENGTH=100>
<INPUT TYPE="submit" VALUE="Send this Form!">
<INPUT TYPE="reset" VALUE="Oops! I need to start over">
</FORM>

And this is what the above code looks like:

Enter your E-mail ID here:

Q: I want one page to automatically take the user to another page after a certain number of seconds. How do I do this?
A: This is called a 'refresh' and is often used to 1) redirect users from an old URL to a new one, 2) redirect users to the main site after a brief cute intro, and 3) to create a 'slide show' of pages. Here's how... In the section of your page, type:

<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" Content="n; URL=next.htm">

Where n is the number of seconds before the user is transferred (give them time to load the page and see anything you want them to see), and next.htm is the name of the page you want them to go to. Note the odd assortment of quotation marks (") --they are important. A good suggestion to also include a clickable link to the next page with a note like "if you are not transferred in 10 seconds, click here". This is for people using browsers that don't recognize the meta tags, though most do.

I've heard that I can use "Javascript" to enhance my page (like adding password ion to my web page so that only certain visitors can view it). Where can I learn more about "Javascript"?

A: In the "Advanced Techniques" page of our HTML HELP section, you can find examples of common JavaScript functions.

Q: If I have an FTP site, will my Personal Web Pages be affected?

A: As mentioned in recent communications, Prodigy is upgrading our software to provide our Personal Web Page users with enhanced functionality.
