General Background: Publications

This campaign is based on background relating to the Hârn setting published by Columbia Games, Inc. I will provide some fairly detailed background about the Hârn setting— especially about Tharda, Coranan, Ilviranism, and Hârnic religion more generally.

Nonetheless, players seeking more information may wish to review some additional modules and publications. I reccomend the following Columbia Games publications, more or less in order of priority.

  1. Hârnworld: The basic introduction to the Hârn setting. The package includes full-size wall map of Hârn, as well as two sizable booklets. One provides a general overview (history, geography, culture, politics, etc.) of Hârn, as well as a brief discussion of Lythia (the huge continent which lies to the east), and some cursory information about the world as a whole.
  2. Hârnplayer: A book containing general information about Hârn (such as included in Hârnworld) as well as a copy of the Hârndex information, along with a sizable section on common folklore and legends. A lot of information is duplicated from Hârnworld, however. The current boxed set of Hârnplayer also includes key HM-3 rules and a pad of character sheets.
  3. Tharda: This module provides detailed information about the Thardic Republic, its government, its settlements, its powerful clans, etc. It also contains a nice fold-out map of the Republic, showing each individual settlement. Sadly, this module has been out of print for sometimes, but module photocopies (and original maps!) may be ordered from Columbia Games);
  4. “Coranan”: An article about the city originally published in two parts in the modules Cities of Hârn and Son of Cities. Both have long been out of print, but photocopies may be ordered from Columbia Games).
  5. Hârnmaster Religion: This publication contains religious background regarding Hârn, including information on each of the ten major gods and their churches, as well as Hârnmaster rules (HM-3 compatible) for handling religious activities.
  6. Gods of Hârn: Long out of print, this publication contains more or less the same background information as Hârnmaster Religion, but has a bit more background information (such as short summaries of key Hârnic myths). It has no rules information of any kind, however. The texts of the myths are available online on the General Issues page of the Hârn Religion Team.
