Exquisite limestone pavements in the cathedral square in Paderborn, Germany. Extensively damaged during WWII, the city has rebuilt and repaired many historic sites, but genuinely old features are rare. Some previously unknown ruins were uncovered after rubble was cleared from the bombing.
Paderborn, like many cities in Europe, is a rich mix of ancient and modern. The natural springs flowing through the city center provided an attractive site for one of Charlemagne's palaces. 15th century Lutheran leaders made such gains that the Jesuits established their own university in the 16th.
