The ARNOLDS of Halifax County, Virginia
A James ARNOLD was present on the tax rolls of Halifax Co., VA more or less continuously from 1782 - 1810. Beginning in 1805 James ARNOLD, Jr. also appears on the tax rolls of Halifax Co., VA.
There were other ARNOLDs listed on the Halifax Co., VA tax lists during the time period 1782 - 1812 (abstracted by Jim Sims from microfilm rolls #2,024,563 and #2,024,564 of original records in LDS Library, Salt Lake City, Utah) :
On 2 May 1786 James ARNOLD and Elizabeth his wife, gave a deposition in the matter of the death bed Will of Moses BOSTICK, who died at his mother's house in Halifax Co., VA. The mention of Elizabeth ARNOLD is the only reference we currently have to the woman who was almost certainly the wife of James ARNOLD, Sr. of Halifax Co., VA and mother to James ARNOLD, Jr.
In 1797 it appears that James ARNOLD, Sr. lost his wife and he became the guardian of his children: Nancy, James, Pattey, Sally and Suckey Arnold, children of James Arnold. William Arnold & David Arnold were James' securities in amount of $5,000. (as abstracted from Halifax Co., VA Guardian Bonds 1790-1799 (from loose papers) and published in Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, Vol 29, No. 2, May 1991 on p. 109.)
The Will of William ARNOLD, Sr. of Halifax Co., VA is dated 30 Apr 1801 and it was probated in July of 1801 in Halifax Co., VA. The Will names the heirs and they include: William ARNOLD, Jr and the widow Mary ARNOLD and her children, wife of and children of David ARNOLD, deceased. In the Will, there is mention of land purchased of James ARNOLD, but there is no relationship mentioned between William ARNOLD, Sr. and James ARNOLD, Sr.We currently believe that all references to David ARNOLD, William ARNOLD, William ARNOLD, Sr. and Jr. in the tax lists of Halifax Co., VA 1782 -1810 refer to a total of just three men: William ARNOLD, Sr. and his two sons William ARNOLD, Jr. and David ARNOLD.We currently believe that all references to James ARNOLD, James ARNOLD Sr., and James ARNOLD, Jr. in the Halifax Co., VA tax lists refer to just two men, namely James ARNOLD, Sr. and his son James ARNOLD, Jr.We currently don't know how Thomas ARNOLD and Noel ARNOLD mentioned on the1812 tax lists of Halifax Co., VA relate to the Wm. ARNOLD, Sr. family or to our James ARNOLD, Sr. family.
The ARNOLDs and BOSTICKs of Goochland Co., VA
In June of 1740 a William ARNOLD, aged 40 years, of Goochland Co., VA gave a deposition in the matter of the Will of William BOSTICK of Goochland Co., VA. Based on the work of other BOSTICK researchers, this William BOSTICK was the father of Charles BOSTICK and Charles BOSTICK was the father of Moses BOSTICK of Halifax Co., VA, the one who died in 1786 (photocopy of recorded Will supposed to be found in Order Book 3, pps. 311 & 312 of Goochland Co., VA, was found in The Genealogy of My Great Grandfather Joseph Bostick of Tennessee and Other Related Families, p. 20, by B.D. Kidwell, 1984, copy in Fort Worth Public Library, GEN929.2K)
It is curious that ARNOLDs testified in 1740 and again in 1786 regarding Wills of a BOSTICK grandfather and his grandson! Could the ARNOLDs of Goochland Co., VA in the 1740's be related to the ARNOLDs of Halifax Co., VA in the 1780's?
