Capt. Walter Sims, the Immigrant

Walter Sims (ca. 1760 - 8 Jan 1820) married Rebecca Green (1 Aug 1772 - Nov 1849) in Bucks County, PA sometime about 1789. Rebecca Green was born in Philadephia, PA 1 Aug 1772, the daughter of Capt John Green, Sr. (1736-1796) and his wife Alice Kollock (1743-1823).

Walter Sims owned property in Philadelphia, PA. He was naturalized a citizen of the USA in 1798, formerly a British subject. In 1798 he purchased a plantation on the banks of the Delaware River 3 miles below Bristol, known as China Retreat.

He was the ship Master of several vessels trading in food stuffs, cider, lumber, iron, clothing, and musical instruments.

By 1808 he removed to Davidson Co., TN later purchasing a farm known as Woodland which he owned at the time of his death in 1820.

     

 

David Sims

David Sims (ca. 1794 - ca. 1828), son of Capt Walter Sims and his wife Rebecca Green was born in Bristol, Bucks Co., PA. He came to Tennessee as a young boy with this parents. He married Elizabeth Mitchell in Sumner Co., TN on 16 Jul 1818.

We don't know much about the life and times of David Sims. He died young and his widow married twice more. Elizabeth Mitchell's 2nd husband was Jesse C. Davis

Children of Elizabeth Mitchell Sims and her 2nd husband Jesse C. Davis:

Lewis Richard Davis (Nov 1829 - ?)

Jesse Davis died about 1836 and Elizabeth Mitchell Sims Davis married a 3rd time to John G. Faulkner

Elizabeth died in Autauga Co., AL in May of 1849.

David William Sims was born 25 Dec 1820 in TN, the son of David Sims and his wife Elizabeth Mitchell. On 28 Mar 1839 David William Sims married Harriet King in Autauga Co, AL. Harriet was born ca. 1825 in Anson Co., NC and was the daugther of John Miles King (1780 - 1825) and his wife Charlotte Hicks Pegues (1789 - 1864).

In 1850, David William Sims was living in Autauga Co., AL and in 1860 he was living in Loundis Co., AL. David William Sims was a 1st Sgt in Co. I, 2nd Reg. Cavalry, GA State Guard during the Civil War.

After the Civil War, the family removed to Sherman TWP, Grayson Co., TX (North Texas) by the time the 1870 census was taken. Between 1880 and 1890 his family moved to Indian Territory. His family is listed on the 1890 census of the Chickasaw Nation, Pontotoc Co., OK Indian Territory. By 1900 he was living in Pauls Valley, Garvin Co., Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. In 1910 he was living with his son Halcot G. Sims in Jefferson Co., OK.

Harriet King Sims died ca. 1889 in OK, and her husband David William Sims died 30 Nov 1912 in Waurika, Jefferson Co., OK. He was buried at Paoli, OK.

 
     
 

Cornelia Lucretia Sims

Cornelia Lucretia Sims was born 21 Jun 1846 in Autauga Co., AL, the daughter of David William Sims and his wife Harriet King. She came to Texas with her father's family after the Civil War.

Cornelia married James K. Polk Jackson on 5 Nov 1872 in Grayson Co., TX. The children of Cornelia Lucretia Sims and James K. Polk Jackson :

Alabama Jackson (b. ca. 1876 - ?), a male

John S. Jackson (b. ca. 1878 - ?)

In the 1880 census of Grayson Co., TX, Cornelia and her young family were living in the household of her father-in-law, Dawson Jackson. The Jacksons were from NC.

 
     
 

Lewis Richard Sims

Lewis Richard Sims was born 6 Mar 1850 in Atorville, Autanga Co., AL. He was the son of David William Sims and his wife Harriet King. He came to Texas with his father after the Civil War.

Lewis Richard Sims married Evaline Jane Bailey on 23 Oct 1872 in Dallas, Dallas Co., TX. She was the daugther of Otway Licepious Bailey (25 Mar 1831 - 8 Oct 1914) and his wife Amanda Jane Colvin (28 Jan 1836 - 16 May 1926).

Lewis Richard Sims and his wife lived to a very old age. He died 12 Feb 1942 in Waurika, Jefferson Co., OK and his wife Evaline Jane Bailey Sims died in the some town in 9 Jun 1945.

 
     
 

Henry David Sims, photo dated Dec 1944

Henry David Sims was born 28 May 1882 in Gordenville, Grayson Co., TX to Lewis Richard Sims and his wife Evaline Jane Bailey. He married Martha Ann "Lena" Cummings at Tecumseh, Indian Territory on 24 Feb 1907. Martha was the daugther of William Marion Cummings and his wife Mary Ellen Gunter.

Henry and Lena had three children, two of whom are now deceased. The middle child, a daughter, now in her 90's, was responsible for the 30 years of research that made this page of family history possible.

Henry was a farmer, dairyman and butcher. He was in business with his brothers Thomas Melton Sims and Lewis Otway Sims in Waurika, OK for many years. Many members of the family were involved in one way or another with the production, retailing and the delivery of goods for the Sims Market and Bakery in Waurika, OK, USA.

That swath of pale skin showing in the above photo on Henry's forehead was due to the fact that he wore a large "ten gallon" hat when out-of-doors.

Henry David Sims died in Waurika, OK on 18 Nov 1968. He was preceeded in death by his wife who died on 18 Mar 1965, also in Waurika, OK.

 
 

Charlotte Elizabeth Sims

Charlotte E. Sims was born about 1854 in Autauga Co., AL, the daugther of David William Sims (25 Dec 1820 - 30 Nov 1912) and his wife Harriet King (ca. 1825 - ca. 1899).

Charlotte married William W. Ellison on 30 Nov 1912 in Grayson Co., TX. Their children:

Robert B. Sims

Robert B. Sims was born Apr 1855 in Autauga Co., AL, the son of David William Sims (25 Dec 1820 - 30 Nov 1912) and his wife Harriet King (ca. 1825 - ca. 1899).

He married Susan "Dollie" Baker in Grayson Co., TX on 14 Jan 1875. Their children:

Halcot Green Sims

Halcot Green Sims was born Jan 1863 in Autauga Co., AL. He was the son of David William Sims (25 Dec 1820 - 30 Nov 1912) and his wife Harriet King (ca. 1825 - ca. 1899).

Halcot Green Sims came to Texas with his parents and he married Georgia Ann Shepperd ca. 1899. Halcot Green Sims died 19 Dec 1948 in Riverside, CA.
