Motto: Auxilio Dei
The first Muirhead name appearing in records was that of Sir William of Lauchope (also spelled Lauchope) at the end of the 14th century.
According to "A System of Heraldry" by Nisbet, The family of Muirhead of Lauchope has always been reputed one of the most ancient families in all the shire of Lanark. It is not known how soon they had the lands of Muirhead. That being past all memory. The House of Lauchope was indeed burned down by the Earl of Murray's friend, the regent, because the Laird of Muirhead sheltered his brother in law, James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, at his house when he fled from Linlithgor after he killed the Regent in 1569 and by that unexpected shock, they lost most of the old evidents and charters of the family.
The surname Muirhead is like other surnames of great antiquity, taken from lands from which the proprietor took a denomination when fixed hereditary surnames became customary. For amongst antiquarians, it is sufficient document of ancient descent when the inhabitants has the surname from the place he inhabited.
The first charter concerning the ancient family is a deed granted by Archibald Comes de Douglas Galovidiac et Bothwell dicto soutiforo Sue Willielmo de Muirhead in Baronia de Bothwell in 1393, being a gentleman of mettle and spirit, he had the honor of Knighthood conferred on him by King Robert III. He also had the honor in 1404 to serve with Sir David Fleming to deal with Henry IV, concerning the redemption of the Earl of Fife and Douglas who has been taken prisoner at the Battle of Hamildon in Northumberland, two years prior.
The Knight of Muirhead of the House of Lauchope married Dame Diana Jean Hay, daughter of Sir William Hay of Locharriet, ancestor of the Lords of Yester, by whom he had William de Muirhead, Dominus of Lauchope in 1445.[MoreheadsSLMS.FTW] 2

William married Lady Diana Jean HAY, daughter of Sir William HAY Of Lockerworth and Yester and Alicia HAY, in 1414 in Lauchope, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (Lady Diana Jean HAY was born about 1397 in Lauchope, Lanarkshire, Scotland.)
