Policies

My principle objective is to develop the music potential of each student.  This is achieved through regular instruction with a balance of repertoire, technique, theory, music history, and performance.

TUITION: Students in K-12

The calendar year is divided into four quarters: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.  Each quarter will consist of 10 (45-minute) private lessons.  Tuition is due in advance of each quarter or in three (3) monthly installments (see the separate brochure for current rates and dates).  Your monthly installment is not for the lessons received in a month but 1/3 of the tuition for the quarter.  Some months might have five (5) lessons and another only two (2) lessons.

TUITION: Adults

Adult lessons are scheduled on a week to week basis and the student is expected to pay the hourly rate at each lesson.

ADDITIONAL EXPENSES:

A monthly statement will include the cost of any music or fee incurred by a student.

MISSED LESSONS:

MISSED LESSONS: Each quarter will have an eleventh lesson.  This will be a make-up week.  If a student has missed a lesson this will be the make-up lesson, otherwise it is a free lesson for good attendance.    Lessons missed by the teacher will be rescheduled or a credit given towards tuition.

TERMINATION OF LESSONS:

Tuition is based on a completed quarter.  Each student who registers for lessons makes a commitment for the entire quarter.  Thus, termination of lessons is appropriate only at the end of the quarter.  If lessons are terminated before the end of a quarter the price for lessons received is $25.00 per lesson.

THE STUDENT:

The student should realize that daily practice is essential and it is best to set aside a regular time and follow this schedule.  The student should arrive on time, with all necessary books.  The student should be responsible for filling in practice sheets and fulfilling any special assignments given by the teacher.

THE PARENT:

Parental support is necessary for the child’s musical growth.  Show an interest and enthusiasm for his or her musical accomplishments.  Make sure the student has a good instrument that is kept in tune; good lighting; good seating (with a stool for their feet if they cannot touch the ground); uninterrupted practice time; and help, interest and support from you.  Young students need help with their practice.  Parents of students in grades 1-3 are encouraged to attend their child’s private lessons.

THE TEACHER:

The teacher has the responsibility to the student to provide a positive atmosphere for learning.  Definite goals will be established for each student.  The teacher will continue to further her teaching skills by belonging to professional organizations, attending workshops and educational programs, reading professional publications, and engaging in other activities leading to professional growth.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES:

All students are enrolled student members of the Texas Music Teachers Association and are expected to take the yearly theory examination given by the Metroplex Music Teachers Association.  This examination is given in November and again in February.  There are many opportunities for recitals, festivals, and competitions for the prepared student.  A schedule of all these events will be available at the beginning of each quarter.

AWARDS:

An Award Recital will be held in May each year.  Certificates, medals and trophies which students have earned during the Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters will be awarded at this time.  The McKay Piano Studio gives trophies, including the “Toby,” based on points students have earned through their participation in the activities listed on the Information Sheet.

 CONFERENCES:

The parent-teacher relationship is very important.  Please feel free to schedule either a phone or in person conference at anytime.  Please do not interrupt another student’s lesson to ask me questions.
