New Jersey and D.C. are telling drivers to hang up
New Jersey and D.C. join New York in the short list of states that ban hand held cell phones while driving. Talking on a cell phone can be distracting, but so is a Slurpie or a coffee. Although these laws verge on nannyism an earpiece or hands free device is typically fairly cheap and convienient. I had heard that in Texas they can ticket a driver for talking on a handset for more than 3 minutes. This seems like a reasonable idea. Still:
Mantill Williams, spokesman for AAA, says the automotive group opposes bans on handheld cell phones while driving.
"The danger isn't the device itself - it's actually the conversation," he says. Headsets, ear buds or other hands-free equipment frees people to talk longer, so these bans might do more harm than good, he says.
