I am learning that the felt board is an absolute essential in homeschooling our 5 year old son. He is the very creative, dramatic, atristic type and he enjoys the felt figures very much. We use it in math, Bible time, reading, spelling and just 'fun playtime'! (recess!) He really enjoys being able to do his own 'shows' as he calls them, where he puts up the felt figures and tells the story and I watch and listen to him. We have the Betty Lukens Bible felts and we enjoy them very much. We have the small set, simply because it was more economical and because I bought a small sized feltboard. You can easily make your own lightweight feltboard by purchasing a piece (or two for more durability) of the posterboard that has the 1/4" thick foam, the kind that older students use for science fair, 4-H projects, etc. (If you can't find these at the local Wal-Mart, I've seen them at craft stores.) Just go to Joann or Hancocks or Wal-Mart fabric department and buy a large enough piece of felt (I would buy a sky blue because it will be the most useful in many of your scenes) to be about 4 inches larger than the board all the way around. Just tuck the excess under the back of the posterboard and hotglue to the back of the board.
We have little ducks, eggs, cats, etc. and felt numbers that I've bought at the local teacher's supply store that we use in math. Betty Lukens has the felt alphabet or you could get that at the teacher's supply store or make your own. (to me, considering how much time it takes to make your own, it would be worth the small investment of buying the letters already cut out at the teacher's supply store.)
I highly recommend that after you cut out all your Bible felts (and believe me, this will take a few days or weeks!) it would be a good idea to categorize the felts in file folders. As you can see in the last picture at the top of this page, I purchased a clear plastic portable file box (at Wal-Mart, of course!) and categorized my felts (all Jesus in one bag, all women in another, all men in one, all animals in another, etc., etc.) in the zipper top baggies and labeled my hanging file folders as to what baggies were in which folder. This way, it makes it very easy to have all your felts ready in a minutes notice for a new Bible story. I also have my numbers, counters and letters in this file, but I'm running out of room!;)
Spelling with the letters on the felt board makes reading so much more fun and of course, this spelling reinforcement enhances the child's reading skills. It also makes it more fun to write words after they've actually 'touched' the letters.
