Peay, Joseph

Joseph was shown to be married with three sons in the 1840 US Census, Coffee County, Tennessee. He was in the Coffee County,

Tennessee 1841 State census, along with sons John Peay, William M. Peay, David Peay, Joseph Peay, Jr., and Newman Peay, all in

the same household. There was another Joseph Peay in the same county living in another household. Joseph again appeared in the

Franklin County, Tennessee (later Coffee County) 1812 Tax List along with George Pea, and a Lewis Hunt and a Abraham Hunt.

Joseph owned land in Coffee County, Tennessee in 1836, 1844, and 1849 according to survey records. Elizabeth was said to be a

native of Cincinnati, Ohio. The father of Joseph is thought by descendents of Newman Mitchell Peay as being John Peay, who was

thought to have ran away from home in Scotland or Ireland with his brother Henry and immigrated as stowaways to South Carolina.

This has yet to be verified. On 26 Mar 1844, Joseph gave "For Love", land given him in Ilinois for service in the U. S. Revolutionary

War, according to the Coffee County, Tennessee Deed Book, Page 281. Joseph, along with other members of the family, owned

stock in 1854 in the Nashville & Chattanooga Rail Road Company. They were listed as living in Coffee County, Tennessee at that

time.

John L. married Francis "Fannie" Keele. Fannie was a sister to Jemima Keele, who married William M. Peay, brother of John L.

Peay. John L. and Fannie had nine children; Catherine, William Keele, James Gibson, Joel, George W. (who died as a

Prisoner-of-War in a Yankee prison), Leindal "Doll", Rhoda Ardena, and Roxanna Peay. David W. married Elleander Katz. They had

twelve children; Napoleon B., Lecil L., Rebecca E., Sarah J., Rosanna, Andrew J., William Franklin, George E., John M., David E.,

James M., and Susan G. Peay. Newman Mitchell married Mary Catherine Henry. They had ten children; Thomas J., Suffronia C.,

George E., Thomas J., James Madison, Elizabeth E., Elmira Victoria, Amanda Paralee, and Ezekiel Emerson Peay. Joseph married

Mrs. Elizabeth Martin who had two children from a previous marriage, John W. Martin, born 1844, and James W. Martin, born 1846.

They had four children; William D., Elizabeth V., Thomas Powel Wand, and Rhoda Peay. Elenor married Washington M. Roach.

They had at least six children; John M., James K. P., Perry C., Ludolphus, Vincent H., and Melvil B. Roach.

Mike Taylor and Earl Agee have much more data on the Peay family, thanks to Mrs. Charles (Georgiana) Pea, Sand Springs,
