Material List for OIL PAINTING with EXPRESSIVE BRUSHWORK
Portable floor easel
Small sketch book & Pencil: Any size between 4x6 and 8x10, containing regular white sketching or
drawing paper and a B, 2B or F graphite pencil
Canvas: Minimum of six canvas-covered panels, size 8”x 10”, 9”x 12”, or 11”x 14”, or a 9x 12 min. canvas
pad, containing 10 sheets of primed canvas, not canvas textured paper or watercolor canvas. If
you bring a canvas pad, also bring a wood, plastic or masonite board and masking tape to mount
the sheets.

Palette: Flat oil painting style, rectangular or oval, paper or wood
Brushes: Hog bristle flat brushes, minimum of four size 8 (approx. ½” wide)
Hog bristle flat or filbert, two size 2
Sable or synthetic sable round, one size 1 or 2
Optional Brushes: Hog bristle flat , size 6, 10 and/or 12
Palette Knife: Medium sized for mixing paint on the palette.
Oil Paint: Student grade or better oil paint, traditional or water-soluble, in the following colors:
Titanium White (large tube)
Cad Yellow Medium or Light
Cad Red Light or Vermilion
Primary Magenta, Permanent Rose or Rose Madder
Ultramarine Blue
Primary Cyan or Viridian
Raw Sienna or Yellow Ochre
Ivory Black
Paper towels: At least one roll. Rags are optional if you want to bring your own and take them home.
Mediums: No toxic mediums like Liquin or Galkyd are allowed in the school. You may use linseed oil,
Walnut oil or poppyseed oil, to help the paint flow. If desired, you may mix the oil with a little
Gamsol, the only mineral spirits allowed in the school.
Brush Cleaners: We won’t be doing a thorough cleaning of brushes in the classroom, but I will give you
tips on how to clean them at home. To keep brushes clean as we paint you may bring
Gamsol or a container of premoistened wipes, like painters wipes or baby wipes.
Containers: A small palette cup for the oil or oil/Gamsol mixture. A medium sized metal cup or dish for
Gamsol to keep brushes clean as you paint.
Miscellaneous: Boxes or carriers for your wet paintings and your palette full of oil paint, vinyl gloves if you
like, a supply of used plastic grocery bags for carrying out your garbage and dirty brushes.
Hand Cleaner: A jar of GOJO crème hand cleaner, available and inexpensive at most hardware stores, will
clean oil paint off your skin, clothes, car upholstery, without drying your skin.
