Marilyn Rose - Artist Information

History and Training
I paint many subjects including architecture, gardens, still life and portraiture, but my subject of choice is the landscape. I paint most often en plein air (on location), often alla prima (finished in one session) or sometimes doing some fine-tuning back in the studio; for larger pieces I paint in the studio from plein air work done in oils or soft pastels. I rarely refer to photos, preferring to rely on my color sketch, my memory of the scene, and my sense of composition and balance to produce a painting that may be more refined than my plein air work, yet retains the original freshness and vitality brought from the outdoors. I work in many media, but my greatest joy is to capture a fleeting impression of a scene in oil, resulting in a small gem that is expressive in color and texture.
I have studied painting, drawing and design since 1992, primarily with Susan Sarback at the School of Light and Color in Fair oaks, California, since 1999. Sarback was astudent of the master colorist Henry Hensche, of the Cape Cod School of Art. I have studied portraiture and landscape with Juan Pena in Auburn, Ca, and I continue my art education in workshops and virtual classes with various master artists, including Barry John Raybould, Silvio Silvestri and Camille Przewodek. On my own, I study design and composition extensively, and I refer constantly to my many books on masters from various periods. My silent mentors include Constable, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Sorolla, Sargent, the French and California Impressionists.
I teach various painting workshops at the School of Light and Color in Fair Oaks, as well as plein air workshops and classes in Placer and Nevada Counties.
My goal is to become the best painter that I can be, and to produce quality work that reflects the natural harmony that I see.

Robert Frost wrote, "Most of the change we think we see in life is due to truths being in and out of favor." Substituting the word "art" for "life", helps me make sense of my constant quest for those truths. I hope never to be thought of as a particular type of artist who practiced a specific mannerism, but one who constantly searched for the underlying principles of fine art and grew in understanding and expression of those principles.
