may choose from ONE of these four classes
1)
'Flamenco Technique' with Valdemar Phoenix
This class
explores the nature of flamenco guitar technique, which is markedly
different from classical guitar technique. A basic knowledge of
flamenco guitar technique will provide the classical player with ways
to interpret much of the guitar repertoire, especially the Spanish
repertoire, in a new and interesting way.
Practice will
include various rasgueados, the tremolo, arpegios, and ligados.
Specific melodic exercises will be provided for each technique.
Participants will
also get to
incorporate these techniques into their present repertoires.
2) LaRue's "Effective General
Method" - presented by Randall Avers
Based on
Guidelines to Style Analysis, this three-day workshop will present Jan
LaRue's systematic, comprehensive approach to style analysis, and apply
the methodology to classical guitar. The goal is to provide an initial
analytical framework or "fundamental checklist" by which we can
positively enhance our
interpretation
of music. Classical Guitarists of all levels welcome.
3) Workshop on Arranging, Transcribing, and
Composition with Beau Benson
<>This class will
explore techniques for transcribing and arranging various types of
music to be
played by one guitar, or guitar in ensemble. The class will examine
the nature
of other instruments from whose repertoire the guitar borrows (i.e.
issues of
range, transposition, tonal characteristics, articulation, etc.) and
will
address a wide variety of compositional techniques through the analysis
of
works of varying style. The class will culminate in students preparing
a brief
arrangement or composition.
4)

Class: Performing as a soloist with a large
ensemble
<>Rehearsal led by Beau Benson
Ensemble: Classical Minds Festival Guitar Orchestra>
<>
Because guitar
is primarily a solo instrument, dealing with an orchestra and conductor
can
often be somewhat of a culture shock for a guitarist. This master class
is a
unique opportunity to address these issues in a safe environment.
Students will
be given the opportunity to rehearse a short work for solo guitar and
guitar
orchestra specifically written for this class. The work, though very
easy
technically, will present difficulties in ensemble. Through the
coaching of the
festival's combined faculty, students will develop a better
understanding of
the role a soloist plays, and a heightened ability to deal efficiently
with the
issues that arise in the rehearsal and performance of a concerto, such
as:>
<>
- when to watch the conductor and when not to watch>
- coordinating with conductors who conduct ahead of the beat
- when to lead and when to follow
- helping the conductor and ensemble follow you effectively
- dealing with balance issues
<>
Students will receive the music to be rehearsed in ample
time to prepare it for the class.>
