Very disturbing article in The New Yorker. So, Iran wants the bomb. Why, for god's sake?
I must admit that my view of Iran has shifted, somewhat, since seeing the film The Color of Paradise. Holy moly, that movie packed a punch. I'd compare it to the Bicycle Thief in terms of both its simplicity and its moral lesson. Perhaps it is its simplicity that allows the power of the moral lesson felt by the viewer. At any rate, the movie shows Iran in a much different light then I'd ever seen it. Beautiful, lush and full of happy peasants. Much like Eisenstein showed Russians. He was an example of an artist attempting to express himself while working within a repressive system. He made great films, but he was also a good little commie.

Yet another reason to despise SUV's.

Happy Birthday Garry Shandling!

Well, it's my birthday. Thirty fricken seven years old. Staring 40 straight in the eyes, beginning my "late thirties". I'm not one of those to get too worked up about it. I still feel like I'm about 8 most of time. When in a room of adults in suits and cocktail dresses, I still feel like a bit of an imposter. Like the former kid I was, peering from the top of the stairs down at my parents having fun.
Sarah gave me "The Art of the Motorcycle", and I couldn't be happier.

a letter to the editor I'm working on
Editor;
Your paper’s series illustrating the difficulties non-profits are having in the current economic climate was sobering but not surprising. Those of us in the field of performing arts already knew that it was tough out there.
But if art lovers, funders, and artists were chilled by the implications of dwindling revenue, then your series is an obvious call to action. There is a strong community of people in the bay area who support and patronize the arts, and they should be applauded. More of us need to learn by their example.
First, it is vital, in this current crisis, that people who work in the arts support one another. By attending performances, buying creative works, donating cash or volunteering, we can be the authors of own success story.
I hope, too, that those members of the public that understand the importance of art in the community will not be timid in their support. There’s been much talk that Americans are looking for a way to help, awaiting a call to sacrifice. They need look no further. Dig deep, we need your help to keep our culture alive and vibrant.

Well, now that I've corrected the spelling of Flotsam and Jetsam, I do believe I'm ready to let the world see my blog. Google! Hear me! Crawl this way. Quick, right now...run to google and type in Flotsam. Am I there yet? How about "detritus"? When will my 15 minutes begin?

And this one just made me mad. This war is too morally fuzzy for me to comprehend. So many things are becoming morally fuzzy.

First entry. Will see how long I am prepared to keep this up.
Let's start with a link and see how it goes from there, shall we? This is a frightening article for those of us in the arts.
