This is a post I wrote to the Bay Area Motorcycle newsgroup (ba.motorcycle):

I like the idea of a ride next Saturday in memory of Julius Long. I was there for last one, and I came away from it feeling like we made our presence known, at least to the denizens of Haight Street.

But I would propose that we widen our scope somewhat. It's important to remember what happened to Julius, but it's important to place it in context, lest it be lost. There are a lot of issuses facing motorcycle enthusiasts right now, and we don't have much of a voice. Our small voice belies our actual numbers, which I think are large (at least in the Bay Area). Think about it, don't you want to be heard in regards to: health insurance, CHP tactics, parking spaces and tickets...and above all - cager awareness? I want the rest of the world to know that just because I ride a bike, it doesn't mean I forfeit my right to a safe riding environment, or that I am some kind of brainless squid who deserves to be plastered all over the side of some SUV. I hope everyone that reads this board shows up and brings chips for their shoulders. A fitting memorial for any rider would be an event that brings awareness to the four wheeled world.

So, who's coming next Saturday? Who's bringing the signs?

Last week, 3 youths of uncertain heritage...they were brown- could have been latin, could have been arabic, could have even been filipino for all I know, it's a melange of a city. Anyway, these three guys pull up beside me while I'm waiting for a light on my bike. "Yo, niggah - how big your bike?"

uh....who, me? I'm thinking. Checking around to make sure they really mean me.

"It's a twelve hundred." I say.

"Light it up, homey!" He says with a grin.

The lights change, and I decide to make the boys a gift of a wheelie. I don't do wheelies very often, they kind of creep me out. But I felt the need. Light it up, homey - indeed.

A Ha! Lambchop was the mystery artist below. From their new album Tools in the Dryer. The song is called "miss priss". Special thanks to Jim Blackwood, the webmaster for Calexico, my most favorite band in the whole world.

I need your help. I heard this tune on NPR last week.

Now, they are usually very good about listing what music they use on their website, but not so here. Even an email to the music directorprompted a curt reply that said he wasn't sure but that it was probably something form George Harrison's "all things must pass". Well thatsure as hell doesn't sound like George Harrison to me.

Can anyone name that tune?

I love Mark Morford:

It's a holiday tradition at Wal-Mart stores nationwide -- as cash registers ring inside, Salvation Army volunteers ring donation bells outside. But this year the world's largest retailer is curtailing bell ringers' collection efforts by limiting them to no more than 14 days at each store and no more than three days in a row. The policy also calls for bell ringers to stay outside and at least 15 feet away from store entrances, mostly to provide ample room for the hordes of vaguely depressed, slump-shouldered consumer lemmings to file through the huge gaping sliding doors like cattle at a slaughterhouse, where they will quickly be scorched with 10,000 watts of toxic halogen hell and blasted with 10,000 leech-like marketing slogans and have their souls vigorously drained of vital life juice and be flaggelatingly coerced into buying shiny plastic end tables and cheap-ass wobbly lamps and giant garish holiday-themed tins of truly awful hard candies no one will ever eat.

Sarah says to me this morning: "if Ashcroft has a thousand people locked up because of their nation of origin or their last name, how can they even THINK about letting this kid John Walker off the hook?" I agree. If they let this kid go, it's going to appear to a lot of people like a separate justice for white folks from Marin. I mean, these thousand folks are not even really suspected of anything, from what I can gather, their only crimes have been immigration irregularities. But Walker actually took up arms against his country men. He is a real-live-honest-to-goodness terrorist.

Personally, I think that this dolt should be kept as a POW until the war is over, and then have his American passport put through a wood chipper. You don't like Marin County? Fine, you can stay in Jalabad.

I love weatherspeak. I spend much time attempting to decipher their code at the NWS. Read on...

SIG CHANGES TO ENSUE THIS PERIOD AS MODELS SUGGEST THE START OF A PATTERN CHANGE. HEIGHTS BEGIN TO RISE IN THE SW AS THE SRN BRANCH TROF LIFTS UP INTO THE PLNS AND UPR MS VLY BY DAY TWO. AT THE SAME TIME... THE STRONG UPR RIDGE DOMINATING THE GULF COAST... SE... AND MID ATLANTIC REGIONS BEGINS TO BREAK DOWN IN RESPONSE TO THE UPSTREAM TROF.

There is a kinship amongst motorcyclists. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers (and sisters) who stare our mortality in eye and laugh at it with impunity. While we may be tied by common threads, there is also a distinct aspect of competition. When some bike screams by you, your (at least my) inclination is to hit the throttle and give chase. That's the fun! Well, this morning, I'm sure the residents of Bush Street were less than amused when I, on my trusty steed, did battle with a girl on black Ducati monster. It was nip and tuck. Not sure who won in the end, but at the last stoplight at Gough we turned to each other, laughed and went our separate ways.
