navi22.gif   Kanisius High School History
  • Kolese Kanisius (or Canisius College or Canisius High School or SMA Kanisius) is one of the best private Catholic High School in Jakarta, Indonesia.
  • It is an all male school that is managed by the Jesuits. Canisius College is not a college. We simply call it Canisius College because it was referred to as a college during the early years.
  • Our curriculum exceeded majority of the other high schools' standards. Due to the advanced curriculum, many of our graduates had more indepth knowledge of the theories taught in courses during their first two years at foreign universities.
  • Canisius was established on July 1, 1927 by Dr. J. Kurris, SJ.. It began with one class that had twenty eight students. At that time, it was called "Canisius Algmene Middlebare School". It was equivalent to high school today. Dutch was the primary language used in the school. However, only children from affluent families, children of dignitaries, or children of expatriates were allowed to attend the school.
  • When Indonesia declared its independence in 1945 (after the Japanese left the country), the primary language was changed to Indonesian.
  • Many graduates from Canisius have become leaders in the society. For example, there is a millionare who started a "semi conductor company" in Santa Clara and currently supplys his product to Toshiba, IBM, etc. We also have an excellent talented Indonesian pianist with an international reputation. Many recording companies in the Netherlands, Austria, Italy, and Spain have recorded his performances onto CDs. In October 2000, Queen Sophia from Spain invited him to perform in the Gala Nite of Queen Sophia Prize in Madrid.
  • Canisius will soon celebrate its 75th birthday (year 2002). As we did on the 50th birtday, we will again celebrate the 75th birthday in all continents of the world.
