Maintain all puppies and adults in a clean, healthy condition and insure that they are given maximum health protection through worming, inoculation, and proper veterinary care at all times. Owners should not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dog to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind. All unneutered bitches and dogs are safeguarded from unplanned matings. Breeders selling a dog or puppy should offer advice and support to the new owners. Owners should not breed dogs in a way that is deleterious to the health of the dogs or the breed. Not knowingly breed any dog or bitch before eighteen (18) months of age nor, for bitches, more often than two out of three consecutive heat seasons, and only then if in robust health. . Keep accurate breeding records, registration papers, and pedigrees. I will not breed any male or female until they are both physically and mentally mature. Before entering into any breeding arrangement, I will scrutinize the pedigree, conformation, and working potential of both the sire and dam, keeping in mind the ideal of the breed. The CVRTC strongly recommends that no puppy should be permitted to go to a new home before 7 weeks of age.
To encourage and promote quality in the breeding of Rat Terriers and to do everything possible to bring the natural qualities to perfection. I have an obligation to refuse the breeding if, in my opinion, it is not in the best interest of the breed. I believe that only those dogs known to be free of serious or disqualifying defects should be used for breeding I will maintain high standards of health and care for my dogs and guarantee the health of my puppies at the time of sale. I will encourage/require the buyers of pet quality puppies to spay or neuter them. To discourage over breeding.
