Poems
for the First Sunday in Lent
Luke 4:1-13
Like you, O Christ our Lord
we have been tempted
to turn stone into
bread
and to make of this
world
a kingdom for just
ourselves
where your holy
presence is
no longer known
awaken within us
the strength to live
by the bread of
heaven
Romans
10:8b-13
It is with our hearts
that we come
to see you, our Lord
fill our mouths
with confessions
of thy Love, and
teach us that through
you
all people have
become one
Psalm 91:
1-2, 9-16
By the Love of Christ, and
in the highest
places
of our hearts
we come to dwell
within you, our Lord
as children of the
Most High
guarded by thy
Angelic hosts
Deuteronomy
26:1-11
Like ancient Hebrews
we wander lost in
deserts
dry with pain
out of the land of Egypt
we walked
until, the coming of
thy Son
now, we rejoice
for through him
our bondage is ended
and hearts freed
to know thy Love
confident in Christ
